Angels Report 6/14
June 14, 2003
Anaheim Angels, 32-30 - Third in AL West
LATEST TEAM INFO
Pitching Rotation
For pitching coach Bud Black, Troy Percival closes games, Brendan Donnelly is the setup man and everyone else in between is interchangeable. "We use all our guys how we see fit, and all those guys are capable of pitching late in the game," Black told the Los Angeles Times on June 10. "Every game is a different story based on what happened the previous day or the previous day before that or what's going on tomorrow. So it's tough to identify in black and white who's going to pitch when. But our guys are professional enough to know that when they get the ball, regardless of the score or the situation, their job is to go out there and get outs."--ESPN.com
Interleague Play
The Angels have had a solid interleague season so far this year. In 10 games the Angels are scoring just under seven runs a game against a pretty soft interleague schedule. Their record against the National League is 7-4. The have faced Montreal, Florida, Phili and they are currently in a series with the Mets.
2003 MLB Draft
In the 2003 MLB Draft the Angels drafted Brandon Wood, a SS from Horizon, Ari.
Wood is a slick fielding high school shortstop. He added muscle this winter without losing his flexibility or range. As a result, his hitting caught up with his fielding and he earned a first-round pick. Brandon Wood could be another Derek Jeter type player.
All-Star Voting
You Angel fans out there should be happy so far. There are six Angels in the Running for the All-Star game. Glaus is the only one who is in position to be a starter. Kennedy is fourth in voting, Eckstein is fifth, Anderson is eight, Erstad, Salmon is 11th, and Erstad is 13th for outfielders.
PLAYER UPDATES
Brad Fullmer- He was ejected from tonight's game in the sixth inning for arguing a play at home plate. In his past ten games he only has five RBI and two home runs.
David Eckstein- He has been out with a bruised hand and a stomach virus, and he starting at shortstop tonight.
Garret Anderson- He was named the American League player of the week for the period ending Sunday, June 8. Anderson batted .448 with Major League-best totals of six home runs and 15 RBIs. He led all Major League batters in slugging (1.103) and total bases (32) for the week, going 13-for-29 with a .467 on-base percentage and eight runs scored in six games.
Darin Erstad- He was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. With Erstad back, Jeff DaVanon is going to see less playing time. However, DaVanon likely will start in right field in place of the injured Tim Salmon tonight.
Jeff DaVanon- Manager Mike Scioscia said he would try to get Jeff DaVanon as many at-bats as possible, whether it means giving a regular outfielder the day off or switching an outfielder to DH on occasion. With DaVanon hitting .433 in his last 67 at-bats, the Angels would be foolish not to find time for him. But Brad Fullmer and Shawn Wooten don't deserve to lose their DH jobs.
John Lackey- He Held the Phillies to one run in 6 1/3 innings on Tuesday to earn his fourth victory of the year. Lackey is 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA over his last six starts. Perhaps that's nothing to brag about, but he had a 7.17 ERA prior to his recent run.
Brendan Donnelly- He has allowed just one earned run in 27 appearances (0.27 ERA) and batters are hitting a meager .150 against him.
Troy Percival- Back from the DL after recovering from a hip injury, worked an inning on Saturday and another on Sunday. His velocity was reportedly down a few MPH from his customary 95-97 range, but Percival attributed the loss of velocity to the wet conditions in Florida, which caused him to be more deliberate with his delivery.
INJURY REPORT
RHP Troy Percival (activated from 15-day DL on June 7), CF Darin Erstad (will be activated from DL on Monday), RF Tim Salmon (bone bruise on left ankle, day to day), SS David Eckstein (bone bruise on left hand, could return Monday), RHP Mickey Callaway (15-day DL, tendinitis in right shoulder), RHP Matt Wise (on 60-day DL, out all season while recovering from ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow).
Rumor Central
The Los Angeles Times reported free-agent pitcher Chuck Finley, who recently rejected an offer to rejoin the Angels as a reliever, worked out for the Red Sox and had received offers from several clubs. Finley, an Angels ace from 1986-99, said he would like to return to his former club, "but I've always been a starter and I want to remain a starter."
