Anaheim Angels
66-45 Second in the AL West - First in the AL Wild Card Race
LATEST TEAM INFO
The Angels made a trade at the dead line, Acquired outfielder Alex Ochoa and catcher Sal Fasano from the Milwaukee Brewers for catcher Jorge Fabregas and two players to be named later. The Angels were looking for middle-relief help, but added a nice bench player in Ochoa, a good defensive outfielder who can give Tim Salmon some relief in right field. It also allows Salmon to DH some, and Ochoa can even play some center field which would allow Darin Erstad to play some first base.
The Angels had a tough time with the Red Sox in their series on the 29th – 31st. They lost two out of the three games against the Red Sox. Anaheim pitchers got hammered for 11 runs in the three game set. Angels hitters were only able to muster six runs in the three games. They hit a rough spot having to face Cy Young candidate Pedro Martinez and the rest of the feisty rotation of the Red Sox.
The Angels bounced back from the losses to the Red Sox and showed everyone that they can play with the best. They split the four game series this weekend with the AL Champion Yankees. The Angels put up 12 runs to the Yankees 17 Runs. Jarred Washburn and Troy Percival both earned wins in the series.
The Angels now find them selves three games out of first place behind the Seattle Mariners, after getting a little bit of what first place tastes like. They still hold a two game lead over the Oakland A’s. So far the second half of the season has been time for the Angels to prove them selves to the league. The Angels pulled off a very impressive 20-game stretch in which they proved their worth to the best teams in the American League. The Angels went 12-8 against Minnesota, Oakland, Seattle, Boston and New York and find themselves tied atop the Wild Card standings and knocking on Seattle's door in the AL West. And now the Angels have series against Detroit, Toronto, Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox. Time to put some of the muscle into lesser opponents and beat teams they have to beat to make it to the playoffs.
Here is a little fun fact that Angels fans should be proud of. They, the fans, really came out to the field when the NY Yankees came to town. All four games of the series against the Yankees were sellouts, and the attendance of 173,639 broke the Angels club attendance record of 173,347 for a four-game series set against Kansas City in July 1983.
Well it looks like Center fielder Darin Erstad will be staying in an Angels uniform for a few more years. Erstad and the Angels agreed, on August 3rd, to a four-year contract extension worth $32 million.
