Astros Report 3/28
March 28, 2003
Of course the most surprising news to come out of Astros camp was the release of veteran righthander Shane Reynolds, who was coming off of surgery. The ‘Stros decided to go with youngsters Jeriome Robertson and Tim Redding in the 4 and 5 spots in the rotation.
Here’s a look at the pitching staff:
Starters
Roy Oswalt – Ace. Fantasy and otherwise.
Wade Miller – Good number 2 starter on most fantasy teams.
Brian Moehler – Classified as an innings eater. Could get 12-15 wins with that offense behind him if he can just pitch decently.
Jeriome Robertson – Up and comer. Could be a nice sleeper pick, definitely keep an eye on in keeper leagues.
Tim Redding – See Robertson.
Bullpen
Billy Wagner – Front line closer.
Octavio Dotel – Best non-closing relief pitcher in the game fantasy wise.
And now a look at the projected lineup:
Craig Biggio (CF) – Will still be available at 2B in most leagues. As an OF, below average, as a 2B, serviceable. Should score a lot of runs with this offense, has been declining.
Julio Lugo (SS) – Not much fantasy value, except in NL only and very deep leagues.
Jeff Bagwell (1B) – Should be around .300, 35 HRs, 100 runs, RBI and BB.
Lance Berkman (OF) – Can expect .300, 40-45 HRs, 125 RBI, around 100 runs and BB.
Jeff Kent (2B) – One of the top 2B in the game. Had career high 37 HR last season, moving to hitter friendly Minute Maid Park.
Richard Hidalgo (OF) – Will begin season on DL. If he can return anywhere near 2001 form would be a steal.
Geoff Blum (3B) – Only value is in NL only leagues. Not the numbers you need from a corner infielder.
Brad Ausmus (C) - Serviceable, only because catcher is such a weak position. Won’t kill your numbers.
