News: Philadelphia pitching prospect Cole Hamels broke his left hand in what the Phillies described as an "altercation" in Florida last weekend. He could be sidelined for three months.
View: Philadelphia area hand specialist Dr. Randall Culp will insert a pin into the fifth metacarpal—the long bone in the palm of the hand that leads to the pinkie finger—of his throwing hand. The pin will be removed about three weeks later, and six weeks later, Hamels will be able to start light throwing.
Details of the "altercation" have not been released as it is still being investigated by Clearwater police.
Hamels was the Phillies' top prospect prior to the 2004 season. That was prior to a bout with bicep tendintis, which limited him to four starts at high Class A Clearwater, where he went 1-0, 1.13 with 24 K in 16 IP. He was going to be invited to MLB spring training and make the jump to Double-A.
Hamels was still listed as the No. 3 Phillie prospect by Baseball America, and remained one of the top LHP and in the top 25 prospects in all of baseball. Now, he will miss a significant portion of a season for the second straight year. Age (21) is still on his side.
