Roberto Alomar (2B), TB - Rumor
March 19, 2005
News: Roberto Alomar, the 12-time All-Star second baseman, may be announcing his retirement on Saturday. The last game in which Alomar played was on Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, where he only played one inning. Friday night's game was the first game he has played in since March 10, due to some back spasms and sprain. In Friday's game he went 0-1 on a strikeout, and made two errors over at second base.
"Robbie and I talked during the ballgame," Devil Rays general manager Chuck LaMar said. "Health-wise he's been a real concern this year and I am sure we will have a statement and Robbie will tomorrow about his future with us."
Views: Here's where Alomar stands in baseball history. He is 276 hits shy of the 3,000 mark. He is a 10-time Gold Glove award winner and was an All-Star for an almost unprecedented 11 straight seasons (1991-2001). Alomar is currently in the midst of a one-year, $600,000 contract with the Devil Rays. He has been having health problems including, some media outlets are saying, trouble seeing the ball. Bottom line: he will probably be retiring on Saturday. We'll keep you posted.
