Oliver Perez (SP), PIT

- Alert: LOW
by Carlos Parodi - Sun Apr 10
  • News: After two shaky starts, Perez has amassed 11 earned runs and eight walks in nine innings pitched.

Views: After a breakthrough '04 campaign, Perez has adjusted his strategy in favor of quick outs and efficient pitching. His strikeout rate will take a minor hit, but it's only a matter of time until he regains his form. It's not a bad time to send out trade offers to panicked Perez owners.

Is there any chance that a manager (one that is not a complete idiot) would view last season as a fluke. Basically what I am asking is could do you think an average owner in a fantasy league would give him up significantly cheaper because of his more than shakey start?

After only two starts I would say no.

Perez is on waivers in one of my Yahoo leagues...so is Barry Zito. And Marcus Giles in another one. You can bet I've got claims in on all of them...

It is nuts, isn't it? Just public Yahoo leagues. Supposedly "competitive" level, but everyone's definition of "competitive" differs. Not seeing anybody like that in my Winners league though. I guess whoever dropped them figured that after a whole week, there was no way those guys were going to return to form. (The guy who dropped Giles did it to pick up Belhorn!)

Still...after the boner I pulled last year I can't ever make fun of anyone's impatience. I dropped Santana when he was 1-4 with an ERA around 7.00 in May. Then he won 285 straight games or something like that...

As a Perez owner, I can only hope that he will soon start showing glimpses of the performances that Willis has been putting up so far.

That's ok, when I was your age, I pulled a few boners myself....
