Bret Boone (2B), Sea

- Rumor
by Chris Wang - Mon Jun 27
  • News: According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners were close to trading second baseman Bret Boone to the Padres this weekend, but the talks have "gotten off track."

Views: Boone is going to be a free agent at the end of the season and the Mariners will almost certainly trade him before the deadline. Boone is having one of his worst seasons ever hitting just .237/.301/.389 with 6 homers and 33 RBI. After getting benched early last week, Boone's bat heated up in San Diego as he went 6 for 12 with a homer and 4 RBI this weekend. The Mariners would love to get a prospect for Boone and dealing Boone would also clear the way for Jose Lopez to start everyday.

The Padres are looking for a temporary fix for injured Mark Loretta who is expected back in late July at the earliest. Geoff Blum (3 for his last 43) and Damian Jackson are currently filling the gap.

I hope the M's can unload Boone. I just picked up Lopez in my keeper.

A prime example of a good juiced player gone great, gone back to good again after the juice.

This almost makes perfect sense in theory. Then, you realize boone has done nothing and figure the Padres are just taking on a large chunk of money.

Keep in mind that Boone played for the Padres in 2000 and the Pads tried to resign Boone but he chose to sign with the Mariners instead. I'm sure that the Mariners would be willing to eat most of Boone's salary if they can get a decent prospect in return.
