Marquis Grissom (OF), CHC - Retired
March 28, 2006
News: Non-roster invitee Marquis Grissom retired Tuesday after 17 years in a major league uniform. This was announced from the spring training camp of the Chicago Cubs, where he was looking for a backup spot on the Cubs' roster.
Views: Grissom retires as one of seven players with 2,000 hits, 200 home runs and 400 stolen bases, joining Craig Biggio, Roberto Alomar, Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson, Paul Molitor and Joe Morgan.
The decision clarifies the Cubs' OF situation somewhat. Behind starters Matt Murton, Juan Pierre and Jacque Jones, the Cubs should break camp with Jerry Hairston, Jr, John Mabry and Angel Pagan as OF reserves. Pagan received the Ron Santo/Billy Williams Rookie of the Spring Award on Tuesday, following a solid spring with the following numbers: .405/.452/.838 (15-of-37 hitting), with four 2B, four HR and eight RBI.
