Jason Kubel (OF), MIN - Alert: LOW
March 29, 2006
News: Kubel hasn't had a great Spring, but Michael Cuddyer's strained oblique muscle may mean he'll head north with the big club. Based on his mediocre performance so far this Spring and the fact that he missed all of 2004 due to injury himself, Kubel appeared headed for Rochester to start the year. If he stays with the club, he'll likely be used off teh bench, with Lew Ford getting the bulk of the starts in Right Field.
Views: Kubel is among the top ten hitting prospects in all of baseball, and the Twins would be wise to stick with their plan for him. If he's not looking like he's ready for the show so far this Spring, they should probably let him get his bearings in Rochester so that he can stay in the lineup. That said, I said something similar about a kid named Albert Pujols a few years back when Bobby Bonilla got hurt near the end of Spring for the Cardinals. Kubel won't be Pujols, but he could easily develop into one of the top ten power-hitting outfielders in all of baseball and hits very well for average. Consider him worth a late flyer in mixed leagues (particularly keeper leagues), as he'll get his chance at some point early this season.
