Freddie Bynum (IF/OF), CHC - Trade (AL to NL)
March 31, 2006
News: The Chicago Cubs acquired IF/OF Freddie Bynum, formerly from the Oakland A's, in a three-team deal involving the Texas Rangers.
Views: In return for Bynum, the Cubs sent LHP John Koronka and a PTBNL to Texas. Texas had sent RHP Juan Dominguez to Oakland in return for LHP John Rheinecker and Bynum earlier in the day.
As mentioned in a post Thursday in the NL Central forum (http://www.fantasyinfocentral.com/forums/sports26952.html), the Cubs were very interested in Bynum, a player considered to be Chone Figgins-lite. He can play all the OF spots as well as 2B, and he has very good speed. He has the 25th spot on the roster, but he should provide some nice depth and great late-inning flexibility.
Not a season-changing trade, but a very nice one by Jim Hendry. Koronka is nothing more than a fairly good Triple-A pitcher that won't ever be any better than a spot starter/long reliever in the majors. Assuming that the PTBNL is of little consequence, Hendry made a good deal here.
