Phil Nevin (1B), CHC - Trade (AL to NL)
May 31, 2006
News: The Chicago Cubs acquired Phil Nevin from the Texas Rangers for IF/OF Jerry Hairston, Jr. Wednesday.
Views: The Cubs are really hurting for some pop in the middle of their lineup, so they traded a spare part (Hairston) for a broken-down part (Nevin). Nevin can hit lefties, so the probable plan is for the Cubs to platoon him at first with Todd Walker.
Alternatively, the Cubs could place Nevin as their full-time 1B and move Walker back to 2B. That, however, would greatly reduce the defense on the right side of the diamond, as well as be a disaster with playing Nevin every day. Prior to the trade, Dusty Baker talked about moving Juan Pierre to the No. 2 spot and batting Tony Womack at lead-off, so Womack won't be benched the coming days. Yeah, this is getting really ugly.
In the long term, Nevin could play a little OF and platoon with Jacque Jones in right. So, there is minute fantasy value here for NL-only leagues unless Nevin goes on a one- or two-week tear.
LOL.
Phil Nevin sure is a beast, though.
