Jered Weaver (SP), LAAA

Fantasy Baseball Player News

Jered Weaver (SP), LAAA - Hot
June 14, 2006

News: Weaver won his fourth straight start to begin his career, allowing only an unearned run on five hits and a walk in seven brilliant innings of Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Views: The interesting thing is going to be what the Halos do later this week, as Bartolo Colon is expected to come off the disabled list for his scheduled start. It's hard to imagine that they pull Jered at this point, but brother Jeff could be facing a possible move to the bullpen. I certainly couldn't see the removal of John Lackey, Kelvim Escobar, or Ervin Santana in the short term future.

WHAT? I can't believe that. He's had 4 great starts and he gets sent down? That's crazy. If LAAA does that it's mad crazy. I doubt any other team would ever do that.

It is all about contracts. They can't have guys like Escobar/Weaver with their huge contracts in the minors or even in the bullpen. That is the rationale thta I heard. I also heard they are trying to trade a starter for a "impact bat" so they can start Jerod Weaver.

well when Colon comes back they will have to decide between Jeff or Jered and Jeff has made a pretty strong case lately. I hope they don't send him down but who knows.

Both Jeff Weaver and Kelvim Escobar, if the Angels did decide to send them to the minors, would reject the assignment in all likelihood and become free agents.

The Halos are only going to send someone down that has options left, and that's Jered.

Think there's a chance Jeff goes to the pen?

No way. I heard this from an Angels beat writer (on the radio ) who basically said the decision was already made. Young weaver goes to AAA until they can trade a starter for a bat. They are also concerned about Colon's health. They say he is almost ready but they are unsure if he will be healthy all year long. They are in a tough spot. They want to trade a starting pitcher for a bat but if they do and than Colon goes down again they are in trouble.

I don't know.... to me, it makes sense to move Escobar to the pen. He's pitched out of the pen before, and while he's been a solid pitcher, he's not been exactly an ace. Jeff probably deserves the demotion to the pen more, but I would guess that Kelvim would pitch better out of the pen than Jeff would, and that difference would make up for the difference between the two in the rotation.

But, in actuality Jered is the one that will go to the minors. It's unfortunate, but because of his lack of seniority it's what the team will do.

The Angels should be looking to trade one of their starters for anything at this point. Don't know the contract situations but Jered Weaver, at this point, provides them with a better chance to win ball games than Jeff Weaver for sure and possibly Escobar and probably Lackey.
