Oliver Perez (SP), NYM - Trade
July 31, 2006
News: Perez was traded along with Roberto Hernandez to the Mets for OF Xavier Nady. Perez, who had been in AAA with the Pirates, was immediately moved to AAA Norfolk by the Mets.
Views: It's amazing to see just how far Perez' stock has fallen in the past two years, but it's important to remember that he's still just 24, and has had two magnificent seasons since first being called up in 2002. This kid could still figure it out, and primarily needs to work on his command. Most of you know that I'm not a fan of Omar Minaya because of his absolute destruction of the Expos/Nats farm system in his brief tenure north of the border, but he made a nice sensible move to grab Hernandez and a potentially terrific move for the future of the organization by snagging Perez in the deal. Most importantly, while Nady is a quality corner outfielder, New York didn't have to give up much in this deal.
