Fantasy Baseball Player News

Jason Isringhausen (RP), STL - Alert: LOW
August 09, 2006

News: Izzy's old friend the walk was back on Wednesday night, but Rich Aurilia didn't stay on first for long after accepting the free pass. Isringhausen walked his first batter in his past six appearances and (not surprisingly) blew his first save since July 9 as David Ross blasted a two run walkoff shot in Wednesday's 8-7 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Views: Though he's been much better over the past month and a half, Izzy's obsession with walking batters is the worst thing you can possibly see out of your closer. I'd much rather have my closer giving up a solo blast than a walk, because that at least means he's going after hitters and trying to overpower them. Isringhausen has had a horrible history with his walk rate over the past few years, and part of it (as shown earlier this year) has seemed to be due to the fact that he's afraid to challenge hitters when he's behind in the count. Hopefully he doesn't let this outing get to him and gets back on track, but we're keeping an eye on him.

Just a question, not a dig by any means:
Do Cards fans just get sick of this guy? He's constantly talked up and seems to always put up decent save numbers (silly stat) but consistently has a higher ERA and BS rate than you'd like out of a guy with his hype/contract.

DAVID ROSS.... MY BOY!!!!!!!

Izzy is like the Reds MVP thus far.... I think going into today his ERA was 81 against us.... WOOOHOOOO.

Who's up in the Cardinals closer role when Izzy leaves or whatever happens to him?

[4] by dpaullin on 08/10/2006 01:41 amreply
Isringhausen consistently puts up 35-40 saves, so more than just decent. He'll convert his save chances in Bob Wickman-esque fashion.

As for future closer, Adam Wainwright has looked good in relief, and there's always Braden Looper.

Wrong. Here are his save totals: 0, 0, 0, 9, 33, 34, 32, 22, 47, 39. He's got about 1 BS for every 5.5 saves he converts.

The STL fans here say Wainwright is starting next year.

For the past five seasons, I was pretty close without even looking at his stats. 33, 34, 32 are pretty close to 35.

Pretty close yes, but it doesn't constitute "consistently" 35-40 saves. If he didn't blow so many it would be.

In a word, yes. I really don't get why they extended his contract last year. He's making a ton of money, and isn't all that good for what he's paid. I'd rather have seen the team look to develop Mark McCormick or Chris Lambert for the closer's role.

Izzy's not going anywhere though...he's not good enough that other teams covet him (especially with that price tag), but he's good enough that you can run him out there.

With four free agent starters on the current team (Mulder, Marquis, Suppan, Weaver), the expectation is that the Cardinals sign one of them (most likely Suppan), move Wainwright into a rotation spot, and (obviously) stick with Anthony Reyes for a spot. By doing this (and keeping Carp), they'd really only need to look for one arm on the open market.

So, I'm guessing Izzy is still gonna close? If he fails, who's second in line? Looper since Wainwright is starting.

I want Mulder to sign with Boston. That would be awesome, provided he can return healthy. 2 lefties. That's sick stuff.

Because we all know having two left handers in your rotation is the key to success...

And I'm hoping Jim is praying just as hard as I am that it's Jason Schmidt.

Schmidt's probably going to Seattle if they want him.

[17] by DOH!!! on 08/13/2006 09:17 amreply
We could have gotten Schmidt (based on the rumors before the nonwaiver trade deadline this year)...

Bavasi has said he would like him. Beltre contract? I would say you have a very good chance of that wish coming true. Especially considering their improvement this year. They really have a nice young core of players out there, great fans, and a pitchers park. Schmidt would kill their payroll come deadline if they are in next year given their budget.
[20] by dpaullin on 08/13/2006 11:40 amreply
Probably a 3 yr/12 per contract for Schmidt?

I would say at least 13 per and probably more than that for only a 3 year deal.

I was thinking he would get more money, but at least 13 sounds right.

Yeah, if your team happens to be called the Minnesota Twins lol

I'm going to guess he gets 4 yrs/50MM. If it's a 3 yr deal, he'll probably get 40 - 42MM.

Schmidt will be 34 next season, so a four-year deal will carry him through his 37th birthday. I know Seattle gave Beltre over $60 million, but will they spend big bucks on someone like Schmidt?

I agree that's steep. Who knows, it's the same GM that signed Beltre and pitching is premium, so if they want him, they will have to. I know he is very high on Bavasi's radar.

I never would have guessed an inconsistent guy like Burnett would get the $$ he got either. Pitching is very, very overpriced in the current market. It would not surprise me one bit to see Schmidt get a hefty deal, despite his age. After all, how many true #1 starters will be available in the market?

On a side note, I truly think the Cardinals are the dark horses in the Schmidt race. Management there knows the starting rotation is the reason why the team has struggled this year, and I'm sure they had set aside some $$ to sign Mulder before he got hurt. If they don't sign Mulder, they probably make a big push for Schmidt.

Burnett is also a few years younger than Schmidt, and teams probably think he's got a brighter future than Schmidt has. Also, Burnett probably has better stuff than Schmidt.

We saw Pedro Martinez available a couple of years ago, and the only serious bidders for his services were the New York teams.

Schmidt has experience though, in the playoffs, and is a proven vet. I'd be surprised if he gets anything less than a $35 mil deal.

Izzy has been in the playoffs in 2000, 2001, 02, 04, and 05. 4-5 in 23 games, ERA 2.36
