Paul Maholm (SP), PIT - Alert: MED
April 24, 2007
News: Paul Maholm came out of nowhere to pitch a three-hit shutout Tuesday for the Pirates' first home win in the 3-0 victory over the Astros. The win helped the Pirates avoid their longest home losing streak to start a season in 109 years
Views: Just as it began to look like Maholm should be put out to pasture, he pitches this gem. Maholm entered the game 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP with three HR allowed in three games. Tuesday, he scattered three hits and a walk over nine innings as he also struck out four. This was his first career complete game. The Astros didn't advance a runner past first base.
There's never been doubt that Maholm has talent, but he just never puts up more than a couple of good starts in a row. As with most Pirate pitchers -- keep an eye on them, but expect them to cause more harm than good on your fantasy roster.
