J.J. Hardy (SS), MIL - Hot
May 12, 2007

News: J.J. Hardy continued his attack on the National League Saturday with his second grand slam of the season in the 12-3 Brewers win at New York.

Views: Hardy was only 1-for-4 Saturday, but he accounted for five RBI. He's hitting .455 (20-for-44) with five HR and 17 RBI for the month of May. Blazing hot.

What is this guy's upside? I thought he had 20-25 HR potential. If that's the case he's half way there and will probably have a huge drop off in 2nd half.

Hardy has always had a lot of potential. I wrote something more in another thread, but basically, anyone with his height and swing can hit home runs. But his swing is successful based on timing, which he has right now. His ability to drive the ball is what drives his stats. He's got better power potential than that for sure.

As to a drop off, yeah, he'll likely drop off. But he's in the same way that everyone in baseball will drop off after a great month of production. Rodriguez will drop off after his April performance, but that doesn't mean he'll have a bad year.

Also remember that past at-bats do not affect future at-bats. So when people talk about his power potential as X per season it's more accurately X HR/600 at-bats, or a % chance of hitting a HR in each at-bat. If over a period of time a player outperforms the expected home runs, that doesn't mean that there is any less chance of hitting future home runs.
