Angel Guzman (SP,RP) CHC - Alert: HI
May 22, 2007
News: Angel Guzman is reportedly being groomed for the Cubs' closer role, both the main Chicago papers have stated Monday.
Views: Lou Piniella promised the media early in the weekend that he was going to shake up the pitching stafft his week. We got deked by Piniella with the Ryan Dempster-to-the-rotation/no-he's-still-the-closer conversation.
But this one looks for real, but it won't be immediate. Dempster will groom Guzman for the role later on this season as Dempster gets fazed out (hopefully not for the rotation). If you have an NL-Only or very deep mixed league, Guzman should have been on your roster. If everyone's missed the boat on him, grab him.
I'm not saying that there is a comparison in the ability, but this may be similar to the Adam Wainwright situation in St. Louis last season. Guzman has the stuff to close, and in the meantime, Guzman should post very good numbers in relief like Wainwright did. No guarantees that he will have the affect Wainwright had at closer, but you don't want to watch this opportunity to go by you.
Any thoughts on who I should drop?
The problem is that we count holds, and Corpas has been solid in the holds category. I play him daily, and picking up a CL with SP/RP status would allow me to continue doing that.
That's a possibility.
We are only keeping 6, so he's not even close.
What about other pitchers? Is Wickman going to take over the CL role again? He hasn't had any opportunities since he returned.
