Justin Verlander throws No-Hitter against the Brewers
The 9th inning summed up this gem perfectly. Justin Verlander struck out Craig Counsell and Tony Graffanino. JJ Hardy flew out harmlessly to Magglio Ordonez to end the game, and Verlander had the first no hitter of his young career.
In the 6th inning, Corey Hart hit a line drive that appeared as if it was going to fall in front of Magglio Ordonez to break up Justin Verlander's No Hit bid. Ordonez made a nice sliding grab to put Hart away and keep the no hitter alive.
Neifi Perez may have outdone Magglio's play with a diving stop in the eighth, which led to a magnificent double play to end the inning. Neifi's stop came right after Bill Hall was walked for the 3rd time in the game.
Verlander has always had dynamite stuff on the mound, but has not put together the high strikeout totals. Coming into tonights start against Milwaukee, Justin's career high for strikeouts was 8. He was able to strikeout 12 Brewers in the game.
Verlander was able to mix together a nasty array of change-ups, fastballs, and curveballs. He came into the night sporting a 3.12 ERA with a 6-2 record, and he had been consistently showing good use of those three pitches in each start. His fastball ranged from 92-100 on the night making it difficult to even key in on his fastball. Despite walking Bill Hall 3 times, and tallying four on the night, Justin kept his pitch count relatively low considering the 12 strikeouts.
Brandon Inge hit a home run, and added another RBI with a single in the 7th. Curtis Granderson hit his 13th triple of the season, extending a 12 game hit streak.
