News: The Rays signed Burrell to a two year, $16 million deal Monday. Burrell hit .250 with 33 homers and 86 RBI last season with the world champion Phillies.
Views: That Raul Ibanez signing in Philadelphia doesn't look quite so good anymore. After a very solid season as a contributor on a World Series team, Burrell will take a $6 million a year paycut and make $2 million less than the Phillies will pay an older left fielder who is, at best, Burrell's equal with the bat and pretty similar in the field.
As for what this does to the Rays, Burrell is expected to assume the duties as the full-time DH, which should make him even more valuable because it will mask his defensive inadequacies. Great signing by the Rays.
