News: Giambi's deal with the A's was officially announced Wednesday. Reports have it being for $4 million for the 2009 season which leaves Oakland holding a $6.5 million option for 2010 with a $1.25 million buyout should they choose not to extend to the option year. Giambi hit .247/.373/.502 with 32 homers and 96 RBI for the New York Yankees last season.
Views: It hasn't been a big secret that the A's were Giambi's likely destination, though it does make you wonder what's to become of former top prospect Daric Barton. Giambi's best position is DH, but he's less of a liability in the field than Oakland's current DH (Jack Cust) is, meaning that we can probably expect Giambi to be manning first base for the A's on a regular basis next season.
As everyone knows, Giambi does have quite a history in Oakland, having won the 2000 AL MVP with the A's. He'll bring a nice veteran presence to the middle of the order and should bash another 30 homers with a high OBP in 2009. However, at this point in his career, those are really the only two major assets that Giambi brings.
