News: ESPN is reporting that the Brewers have agreed to terms on a contract that will pay Hoffman $6 million to be their closer in the 2009 season. The all-time saves leader, Hoffman was 3-6 with 30 saves, a 3.77 ERA, and a 1.04 WHIP last season in San Diego.
Views: It's sad to see, but that's just the way the game is now. Hoffman came ever so close to playing his entire career with the Padres, but will now move onto Milwaukee. The fact that the Brewers didn't really have anyone entrenched as their closer obviously made the situation more attractive to Hoffman than their primary competition in Los Angeles was.
Though Hoffman's certainly past his prime, he's still a solid lower tier closer who you should expect 30+ saves out of with an ERA that won't kill you, about 8 strikeouts every 9 innings, and a nice, low WHIP. The biggest plus here is that Hoffman will have fewer trips to Coors Field to take.... Hoffman has a 5.85 lifetime ERA there.....
