With the rise of daily fantasy leagues, we're adding a new feature to the site.... We'll now be offering an FIC Daily Pick to Click several times a week. There are several reasons that we could highlight a player. He could be riding a tremendous hot streak. He could be a star that's seen his stock drop because of a slump that is showing signs of climbing out of it. He could be a waiver wire type who has an extreme matchup against a particular pitcher or - in the case of pitchers - lineup that he's facing that day. Finally, he could be a player whose salary just seems a touch too low at the site that we're using to determine our daily pick.
Either way, many of these FIC Daily Picks to Click are going to be useful for those of you who are more focused on full season leagues as well. It can help with daily roster decisions, such as whether you should consider playing - or benching - one of your hitters or pitchers. There's a good chance that we'll have a few waiver wire pickups on here for those of you who might be trying to stream a spot or find a short-term replacement option for an injured player. Furthermore, I'll give you all a chance to ridicule me when I'm wrong, as we're going to showcase the results of each player we pick.
FIC's Daily Baseball League Picks
|Fri. 5/25/12||Yovani Gallardo||P||$7,600||Matchup||After a slow start to the year, Gallardo has turned it around in his past few starts. In fact, he's allowed just 12 runs in his 7 starts against teams that aren't the St. Louis Cardinals. He's 5-0 lifetime with a 1.20 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP against Friday's opponent, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and that doesn't include 14 playoff innings in which he allowed just two runs last year.|
|Fri. 5/11/12||Justin Upton||OF||$3,900||Matchup||Upton is 7 for 10 lifetime against Madison Bumgarner including a double and a home run.|
|Fri. 5/4/12||Jon Lester||P||$7,400||Matchup||This is boom or bust, since Lester is off to a rough start and the Orioles have been a lot better than anyone expected so far. However, Lester is 14-0 with a 2.36 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts in 114 IP against the Orioles in his career.||6 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 2 K... No decision. They actually took him off the hook, as he left trailing in what would eventually be a 6-4 loss for the Red Sox in 13 innings.|
|Tue. 5/1/12||Carlos Ruiz||C||$3,300||Matchup/Hot Streak||After hitting a two-run single in the first inning of Monday's game, Ruiz is 7 for 15 with a walk, a HR, and 6 RBI in his past four games. There's not a ton of history against Brandon Beachy. Ruiz has just 8 AB against him, but he's made the most of them. He's 5 for 8 with a HR lifetime against the Braves right-hander.||Ruiz had 2 2b, 2 HR, and 12 RBI in a four game stretch including this game. Unfortunately, in the game that I picked him in? He went 1 for 4 with a single. He went 3 for 5 with 2 2b, 1 HR, and 7 RBI the next night....... Slumping!|
|Sun. 4/29/12||David Wright||3b||$3,900||Matchup/Hot Streak/Coors||The Coors Field stacks have worked fairly well the past two days, as there were 27 runs scored Friday and 12 Saturday between the Mets and Rockies. The Rox through Jamie Moyer Sunday afternoon, who Wright has hit .415 (22 for 53) lifetime against with 4 HR and 5 2b. He's riding a nice five game hitting streak, and went 3 for 4 with a walk and a steal Saturday.||2 for 3 with a double, 2 RBI, 2 Runs, 3 Walks, and a SB. He wasn't cheap, but he was good for 11.75 points.|
|Fri. 4/27/12||Billy Butler||1b/DH||$3,700||Matchup||Butler showed some signs of busting out of his hot streak with a couple of homers on Wednesday. He's 21 for 49 (.429) lifetime against Carl Pavano with 6 doubles and 2 HR.||2 for 5 with a HR, 3 RBI, and 1 Run. Butler had a strong day at the dish, though teammate Alex Gordon had a better one. He was good for 8.25 FD points.|
|Thurs. 4/26/12||David Wright||3b||$3,800||Matchup||It might be time to throw away the Batter vs. Pitcher as my top guideline, as it's been brutal to me this week. We'll try it one more time. Wright is 21 for 54 (.389) with 5 doubles and 4 HR lifetime against Ricky Nolasco.||Not bad, but not a great buy for the price either. Wright went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. He was worth 3.5 points.|
|Wed. 4/25/12||Jack Hannahan||3b||$2,800||Matchup||With Choo scratched, we'll take his teammate Hannahan. Hannahan is crazy cheap, and he's 7 for 13 lifetime with 2 HR off of Luke Hochevar.||Hannahan was a brutal 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts. Hochevar held the Indians to 2 runs on 4 hits in 6.1 innings. Even after the stellar start Wednesday, he's 5-8 lifetime against the Tribe with a 5.57 ERA.|
|Wed. 4/25/12||Shin-Soo Choo||OF||$3,700||Matchup||The Tribe should have a good night. They have three guys who absolutely crush Luke Hochevar. Choo has the best history of that bunch, having gone 15 for 25 with 4 doubles and 3 HR in his career against the Royals former number one overall pick.||Scratched, so we're going to make another selection for tonight.|
|Tue. 4/24/12||Brian McCann||C||$3,800||Matchup||McCann is a ridiculous 11 for 20 with 5 doubles and 2 homers against Aaron Harang.||We're slumping a bit. 1 for 4 with a run. Good for 1.25 FD Points. Not a great return for your $3,800.|
|Mon. 4/23/12||Mark Teixeira||1b||$4,000||Matchup||Tex isn't a cheap option at $4,000, but he's 7 for 15 lifetime against Derek Holland with 3 HR. In fact, a Yankee stack might make a lot of sense. Holland is 0-4 in five lifetime starts against New York with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.||At least the Yankee stack idea kind of worked. Teixeira's night started ugly as he struck out with the bases loaded and one out. He grounded into a double play in his next at bat. He was one of four Yankees to go 0 for 4. The other five went 9 for 18.|
|Sun. 4/22/12||Adam Dunn||1b||$3,100||Matchup||Dunn has demolished Mariners starter Kevin Millwood. He's 8 for 19 lifetime. Six of those eight hits have left the yard.||Nothing special. 1 for 4 with a single, a walk, and an RBI. 2.25 FD Points.|
|Fri. 4/20/12||Ryan Raburn||2b||$3,000||Matchup||Raburn is 8 for 12 lifetime with 2 doubles and 2 HR against Rangers starter Matt Harrison. He's in an incredible funk to start the year, but this could snap him out of it.||Rained out, and I got burned by my own advice (sort of). I had to work and got home about ten minutes after rosters locked, so I got stuck with some Tigers in my lineup Friday night.|
|Wed. 4/18/12||Andruw Jones||OF/DH||$3,200||Matchup||It's tough to pick Jones here, since the Yankees are platooning him and they're facing a right-hander tomorrow. The fact that Raul Ibanez has a good matchup against the same pitcher makes Jones iffy to even start tomorrow. His lifetime numbers against Jason Marquis tell me that I sure hope Joe Girardi believes in batter vs. pitcher splits, though. Jones is 9 for 12 with 5 HR and 14 RBI lifetime against Jason Marquis. Sheesh!||0 for 3 with a walk and 2 K. Hey... Most of the batter vs. pitcher data was from a long time ago. I pulled him from most of my lineups because he wasn't originally going to start, but he played because Brett Gardner (now on the DL) was a late scratch.|
|Tues. 4/17/12||Matt Diaz||OF||$2,600||Matchup||Diaz is off to a miserable start, batting just .143 on the year. He'll get his second matchup of the season against Mets' lefty Johan Santana. Diaz is 17 for 34 lifetime against Santana with a homer and 4 doubles.||2 for 3 with 1 Run and 1 RBI. Both hits were singles. He actually almost took Santana's head off with one of them. 3.75 points at FD.|
|Sat. 4/14/12||Carlos Lee||1b||$4,100||Matchup||At that price, I didn't see myself taking Lee all year. However, he's raked against Carlos Zambrano in his career, going 24 for 67 (.358) with 6 doubles and 5 HR.||3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI. Good for 5.5 points at FD.|
|Fri. 4/13/12||Derek Jeter||SS||$3,400||Matchup/Hot Streak||Jeter has been en fuego to start the year, batting .370 with a HR and a couple of doubles on their opening road trip. We always expect Jeter to do something in big games for the Yanks, and the home opener against a different team that went on a spending spree this offseason counts as one. Did I mention that he's 17 for 38 (.447) lifetime with 3 HR off of Ervin Santana, too?||1 for 4 with a double. Can't win 'em all. 1.25 points.|
|Thurs. 4/12/12||Derek Holland||P||$6,500||Matchup/Poor Opposing Lineup||There are a handful of starters I really like Thursday. Ian Kennedy is 5-0 in 6 career starts with a 2.01 ERA against the Pads with an insane 59 strikeouts in 47 innings. He's also the most expensive guy on the board. Mat Latos has a good matchup with the Nats, too. When all's said and done, I'll take the safe $6,500 option and the discount rather than throwing a crazy cheap flyer on Anthony Bass or Drew Smyly. Holland is 5-1 lifetime against the Mariners with a 3.17 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He's also fanned 47 in 48 innings against them.||7.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 8 K, Win. Holland was good for 18.33 points over at Fanduel.|
|Wed. 4/11/12||Jon Jay||OF||$2,800||Matchup||Jay is 8 for 15 lifetime with 2 HR and a double against Johnny Cueto.||1 for 3 with a HR, a walk, a run, and 2 RBI. Jay hit his third career bomb off of Cueto in just 18 lifetime AB. He has just 15 HR in 765 AB for his career. Jay was good for 7.5 points at Fanduel, which is a heck of a return for a $2,800 player.|
|Tue. 4/10/12||Corey Hart||OF||$3,600||Matchup/Hot Streak||Hart has started the season red hot, batting .417 in the first four games with 3 HR and 3 Walks. It shouldn't change tomorrow. He's raked against Paul Maholm in his career, batting .318/.392/.659 with 4 doubles, 1 triple, and 3 homers in 44 career AB against him.||1 for 2 with a walk, a HBP, and a run. 3.75 points at FanDuel.|
*FanDuel is one of many daily baseball league sites that set (and routinely re-evaluate) the salary level of each player. For the purposes of our picks, we'll be using their salaries (as of the date of the pick) unless noted otherwise.
