2009 Rankings Underway
by James Meyerriecks - Wed Mar 11
  • We're happy to be back at FIC, and we're going to start rolling out our rankings again. During the season, this is something that I'll be able to set up on a weekly basis covering the entire league. For the preseason, though, we're going to be going a little more in-depth at each position, covering a brief write-up of the players to watch and ranking them in tiers. While I'd love to make it a reality where I could handle it all in one day, it's just not going to happen. For that reason, we'll be running one to two positions a day until we've covered all of the positions. We have started with our Catcher Rankings.

As for these rankings and how they'll be released, we're running last year's final numbers, as well as a three-year average for any player with big league experience who might be relevant for the 2009 season. In the past, we've used projections as a possibility, but there simply isn't enough of a window right now to put the projection system in place. We will have projections next season. This is part of the reason that we're covering the "Who's who" at each position to help rank players into tiers.

The FIC rankings system is based on a standard 5X5 league that includes the following statistical categories:

    Batters
    Runs
    Batting Average
    Home Runs
    Runs Batted In
    Stolen Bases

    Pitchers
    Wins
    Saves
    Earned Run Average
Walks + Hits Per Inning Pitched
    Strikeouts

Each players production in every category is weighted to comprise a player's overall value. The first basemen should be due up next, and will be out later Wednesday.
