Systems Audit: Chicago White Sox
September 25, 2006

Systems Audit:
Chicago White Sox

1. Josh Fields, 3B, AAA. Fields did what he needed to do this year to move up the White Sox prospect list. He began to hit the ball. He improved his contact rate and, though he didn't lower his K rate (25% of his ABs) he added power. He'll challenge Crede for the starting job out of Spring Training next year.
2. Ryan Sweeney, CF, AAA. Sweeney is another in a long line of CF prospects from the White Sox organization. He doesn't have the ceiling Chris Young (now with ARI) does, but he's still got a solid future ahead of him. Good contact rate and some power leads him to project as a two-hole hitter.
3. Robert Valido, SS, AA. Valido is a good defensive SS with little to no power. He needs to work on taking pitches and getting on base. When he does that he'll be a very solid producer with 50 SB potential.
4. Kyle McCulloch, RHP, A+. McCulloch was the White Sox 1st round draft pick this year and had limited success in Rookie Ball before being promoted to A+. He should move fairly quickly through the system with a plus fastball and a plus curveball. He has a great knowledge of how to pitch based on previous at bats.
5. Lance Broadway, RHP, AAA. Broadway is a very hittable pitcher but has done a decent job of prohibitting the long ball. He will be overrated by many and I must caution you to not buy into the hype. He looks so much better on paper than he actually is; the reason: 47 ER, 59 R.
6. Jerry Owens, CF, AAA. Could be a leadoff hitter someday but needs to work on his contact rate before that day comes. He takes enough walks that if he improves his batting skills he'll be a very solid option, but time is working against the 25 year old. He projects as a .270 hitter with an OBP of .350.
7. Chris Stewart, C, AAA. Stewart is a power hitting catcher with little OBP skills. He won't walk a lot and will hit about .260. Decent defensive catcher, but nothing to win him a job on.
8. Ray Liotta, LHP, AA. Most of his success has been a mirage. His periferals indicate his success has been merely riding the positive side of variance.
9. Sean Tracey, RHP, AAA. He needs to improve his control before he can be an effective reliever.
10. Casey Rogowski, 1B, AAA. The White Sox are the only team that I can recall with two 25 year olds on their top ten. Nothing special here.
Flier: Matthew Long, RHP, A. He's had Tommy John surgery but has come back with a plus fastball and a plus curve. He could be a very good closer in a few years...if his elbow holds up.

The White Sox are depleted but that usually happens when teams trade away future talent for a shot at the World Series. Their future lineup looks a lot like their present lineup and even more like their 2007 lineup.

C: AJ Pierzinski
1B: Paul Konerko
2B: Tad Iguchi
3B: Josh Fields (2007)
SS: Robert Valido (2008)
LF: Scott Podsednik
CF: Ryan Sweeney (2007)
RF: Brian Anderson
DH: Jermaine Dye

Starting Pitchers
1. Jose Contreras
2. Mark Buehrle
3. Jon Garland
4. Javier Vazquez
5. Kyle McCulloch (2009)

Relief Pitchers
Closer: Bobby Jenks
Setup: Matthew Long (2008), Mike MacDougal
Middle Relief: Neil Cotts, Dustin Hermanson
Long Relief: Sean Tracey (2008), Ray Liotta (2008)

System Grade: C-

Fields was a QB at Oklahoma State and was drafted by the White Sox. I believe the trade ended up being Thome and Gio Gonzalez for Aaron Rowand and Daniel Haigwood.

The Phillies still have Gio - at least as far as I know he's been playing for AA Reading all season.

Yeah, Gio is still on the Phillies.

Well, Crede's contract is up so he may head west (Anaheim or San Diego) and I think Garcia will be traded.

McCulloch's not ready for next year, is he?

Well Crede has Scott BorASS as an agent, and him and Kenny Williams don't get along too well. But he is arbitration eligable. Fields has also been playing some LF down in Triple AAA.

And it will be Brandon McCarthy in the 5 spot in the rotation.

No, fixed it. Thanks dp. He'll be in the big show in 2008 in limited action but will be ready to start in 2009.
