Diamondbacks Season Preview
March 16, 2002
Brian Anderson. One to watch this spring. He is fighting for the fourth and fifth spot in the rotation with Miguel Batista and Todd Stottlemyre. If he pitches like he did late last year I feel like he can earn the fifth spot.
Miguel Batista, One of the most underrated pitchers in baseball. Brenly says that he will be a utility pitcher but I can't imagine such a high quality pitcher coming out of the pen. Fantasy spin: steal him late in your draft. Trust me you won't regret it.
Rick Helling, I am not sure that this move will work out for the d-backs. Helling never misses a start but gets lots of his outs on fly balls, a fly ball pitcher is not what you want to have a bank one ballpark where balls just fly out of. Fantasy spin: stay away unless he gets some great advice from randy or curt
Randy Johnson, What can you say about the guy? He gets better every year. If you really need me to explain this guy you must be an idiot. But I will anyway. Randy is the best pitcher baseball has seen in a very long time. His strikeout numbers are astronomical and his era is amazingly low. His win totals are always good even thought he seems to never get any run support. Fantasy spin: if you don't pick this guy with your 1st pick you have issues.
Byung-Hyung Kim, Kim is a middle reliever. He doesn't get that many saves but for his innings pitched his strikeouts are great. Fantasy Spin: if holds or K/IP are stat categories in your league Kim is a must have.
Matt Mantei, I have never been big on Matt, if you look at his numbers you will see that he is streaky. Coming of Tommy John surgery I am skeptical that he will pitch well this year. Fantasy Spin: If you listen to me I would say stay away.
Mike Morgan, I love Mike he is a great guy the only problem I have with him is he is not that great of a baseball player. Fantasy Spin: in a 25 team league draft him but in a normal league don't
Mike Myers: Myers is a Lefty Specialist. If you look at his stats you have to remember that he was pitching a Coors field. Fantasy Spin: in fantasy baseball you try to stay away from anyone that is a specialist. That rule applies here.
Bret Prinz, Bob Brenly likes Prinz and I am glad because I think he is the only one who does. Prinz is overrated and won't get that much playing time this year. Fantasy Spin. There is a wise saying. If he doesn't play stay away.
Armando Reynoso, I hate Reynoso, my dog hates Reynoso, everyone hates Reynoso. Simply put he stinks
Fantasy Spin: stay away at all costs it is better to have an empty starting pitcher spot then to have Reynoso.
Curt Schilling: Schilling is great, he has great win totals, great strikeout totals and a killer era.
Fantasy Spin: Draft him
Todd Stottlemyre: I personally don't think that Stottlemyre will make a good recovery. It is just my opinion but you are reading this because you think my opinion means something.
Fantasy Spin: I wouldn't suggest drafting him.
Rod Barajas. Catchers don't play 162 games Rod fills in when damian doesn't play
Fantasy spin: in a large league go ahead and draft him but I wouldn't suggest it for a smaller league.
Damian Miller: damian is a top ten catcher who doesn't get any respect because he isn't in the players union. But he has good stats and plays lots.
Fantasy Spin: With catching such a shallow a position I would suggest taking damian miller in the mid to latter rounds
Jay Bell: I wouldn't have suggested him two weeks ago but it looks like bell will be playing third at least until the all-star break.
Fantasy Spin: take him as a back up 3b man
Alex Cintron: this guy is just waiting for a shot. I think that if he is given the playing time he could be really good.
Fantasy Spin: keep an eye on him and if you are in a franchise league draft him now.
Greg Colbrunn: Colbrunn's role on the team is to pinch hit or play 1st in case grace and Durazo get hurt. He can also play catcher and does occasionally.
Fantasy Spin: he doesn't get enough playing time for you to draft him but if grace and Durazo or miller and Barajas get hurt....
Craig Counsell: believe it or not Craig could be the most popular player on the team. Don't ask me why but I do believe that he will get more playing time this year and that his stats will go up.
Fantasy Spin: not A bad late round pick.
Erubiel Durazo. Durazo is going to be great...but not this year. He won't play in right and he won't play 1st but he will pinch his. Next year when grace is gone though look for a 40 hr 100 RBI year from Durazo.
Fantasy Spin: only draft him this year if you are in a keeper league.
Mark Grace. People say that he is to old and then he hits .305. when will we learn… anyway I think that his will be grace's last season and that his stats will be about the same as last year.
Fantasy Spin: if you are in a keeper league stay away but in a regular league go ahead and draft him.
Lyle Overbay: you have to be a die hard to know about this guy but if you look at his stats in AA they are incredible! He his over 400 last year! He is the 1b man of the future for the d-backs.
Fantasy Spin: not this year but he will be good sometime.
Junior Spivey: I think that Spivey and Counsell will end up sharing time at 2B with Counsell getting most of the time.
Fantasy Spin: when he plays he puts up good stats but he doesn't play enough
Matt Williams: he is out until at least the all-star break and I wouldn't be amazed if he retired before then.
Fantasy Spin: Stay away at all costs
Tony Womack: he will do his typical get on base then steal second thing.
Fantasy spin: if you need stolen bases he's your guy.
Danny Bautista, People are making a big deal out the fight for the starting spot in right. Really its not that hard the best player plays. I think that this year the best player will be Danny Bautista.
Fantasy Spin: look at his stats, this guy is really good. Good enough to deserve a starting spot on your team? Maybe.
David Dellucci, David is good when he plays the only problem is that he doesn't play much. He gets about 1 at bat for every 3 games.
Fantasy Spin: if he wins the starting job in right draft him.
Steve Finley: my idea coming in to 2002 was to trade Finley for a number 3 Pitcher. Well we haven't done that yet and it doesn't look like we will, so I guess Finley will be starting in center and hitting 275 with 25 hr and 75 RBI.
Fantasy Spin: you may as well have him because if you don't someone else will and then he will hurt you.
Luis Gonzalez: people are saying that his stats will drop off. Ya they said that last year and the year before and he has consistently proven them wrong. I don't think he will drop of too much maybe five less home runs. But because everyone says that he won't be that good this year you can likely draft him in the third round.
Fantasy Spin: he is one of the top three out fielders in the game if you can get him the third go for it.
