Latest Team News

I’m going to do something different for this team news; I will be going player by player instead of just a paragraph or two about the whole team, which should help you as a fantasy player.

Brian Anderson: Not worth having.

Miguel Batista: He has struggled as of late, so I would say that you should only have him if you are in a very deep league.

Rick Helling: He is looking better then he did at the beginning of the year but not good enough to have on your team, yet.

Randy Johnson: He has not looked his best lately but I’m sure he will recover and be fine. His struggle tends to be that he gives up 2 or 3 runs in 8 innings—nothing to worry about.

Byung-Hyun Kim: He is looking good right now and Mantei might not have a job when he gets back. There is still a question of who will close though, so I would trade him for another high end closer right now.

Mike Myers: If your league counts holds as a stat grab Myers.

Eddie Oropesa: He has been a pleasant surprise for the Diamondbacks this year. He has a low ERA and gets lots of holds also.

Curt Schilling: The guy is amazing. If you can get him in a trade right now I would do it. Looks like he might be getting a Cy Young Award this year.

Todd Stottlemyre: Back on the DL. Drop him.

Rod Barajas: Has been getting more starts lately because of Millers back strain, but has yet to put up good numbers. Also it should be noted that Barajas has turned into Miguel Batista’s personal catcher.

Damian Miller: When he plays he is wonderful and he should start playing more because his back doesn’t seem to be bothering him much any more. Doesn’t catch for Miguel Batista.

Jay Bell: I don’t think he will get his job back. Don’t waste a DL spot on him in hope that when gets back he will play.

Greg Colbrunn: He is great when he plays, But the Diamondbacks have the ideal situation at 1B so don’t count on him playing much.

Craig Counsell: He has established him self at 3B both defensively and offensively. If you are in a deep league go ahead and pick him up.

Chris Donnels: Plays occasionally but not enough to have.

Erubiel Durazo: Second game back, three home runs. Yep, that’s right. Pick him up! He is for real.

Mark Grace: With Durazo back he will not be playing everyday. Also he has a bruise on ankle but it is not serious.

Junior Spivey: He is amazing! Will help you in every category. Pick him up.

Matt Williams: See Jay Bell.

Tony Womack: If you need steals go ahead and grab him.

Danny Bautista: Looks like he could be heading for the 15 day DL due to a dislocated shoulder. Don’t drop him just put him on your bench or DL.

Steve Finley: Has been hitting well. Worth having as a bench player.

Luis Gonzalez: His HR’s and RBI’s are great and I think his AVG is at 299 and should come above that very soon.

Jose Guillien: Doesn’t play enough.

Injuries: Matt Mantei 60 day DL recovering from Tommy John surgery, he is pitching well in AA El Paso; Armando Reynoso 60 day DL recovering from neck surgery; Matt Williams 60 day DL with a broken hip; Jay Bell is in the middle of a rehab assignment in AAA Tucson; Danny Bautista Dislocated Shoulder could go on 15 day DL; Todd Stottlemyre on the DL because of arm trouble.

Local Perspective: The fans in Phoenix are really getting excited about this season. You just can sense the fact that they are behind the team 100%, and a series with the giants doesn’t hurt. Lets hope it stays like this.

Rumors: The latest rumor has Byung Hung Kim, Eddie Oropesa and Brian Anderson to Colorado for Mike Hampton. Simply put, its not going to happen. Kim is more valuable then Hampton to the Diamondbacks and so to trade him, Oropesa, and Anderson all for Hampton is unreasonable. However Brian Anderson is said to be up for trade. His value will greatly decrease if he is traded.

Add:
Junior Spivey: He is putting up great stats right now and I expect him to continue to do that for the rest of the season.
Damian Miller: He is really hitting the ball well right now. If you look at his stats his HR’s and RBI’s are amazing and I think his AVG will start to rise soon. With catcher being such a hard spot to fill Miller is a great player to have on your team.
Erubiel Durazo: Mr. Power. 40 + home runs this season isn’t out of the question.

Drop
Jay Bell: don’t count on him getting his job back.
Matt Williams: see Jay Bell.
Todd Stottlemyre: this injury could be the end of the line for Todd

Hold:
Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling and Luis Gonzalez (do I really have to explain?)
Damain Miller: a good starter for any fantasy team.
Junior Spivey: see Damian Miller.

Trade:
Erubiel Durazo: Okay, so you picked up the guy but you have Giambi or Delgado at first base. Well, trade the guy. You can get top dollar right now for him.

LATEST TEAM INFO:

Now their hot now their not. That's about what the Diamondbacks have been doing. After two huge losses they were able to win the biggest game so far this year. They came home on April 30th and they lost huge to the Mets. The next night the same result. Then on Wednesday they were able to finally beat the Mets. Danny Bautista has a very hot bat right now and it would be wise to pick him up if you need help with AVG. or HR. I would go ahead and pick him up Both Junior Spivey and Luis Gonzalez are in the middle of slumps right now but both have shown positive signs of late so I think the will turn on there bats very soon and I recommend both of them. Randy Johnson has a lower back strain. It is not expected to be serious but he will miss a start.

LOCAL PERSPECTIVE:

Fan turn out at the park has been surprisingly good even after the two losses to the Mets.

INJURIES:

Matt Mantei 60 day DL recovering from Tommy John surgery, Armando Reynoso 60 day DL recovering from neck surgery, Matt Williams 60 day DL with a broken hip, Jay Bell is in the middle of a rehab assignment in AAA Tucson, Erubiel Durazo will start rehab Tuesday may 7th, He had wrist surgery.

RUMOR MILL:

No serious rumors going around right now.

ON THE FARM:

Jose Valverde. Valverde the top closer in the diamondbacks system right now, even though he lost the last half of 2001 to elbow trouble. Before he had elbow trouble he had strikeout 72 batters and gotten 14 saves in 41 innings. If the diamondbacks ever need help in the bullpen watch for him to be called up. Especially if Matt Mantei comes back and doesn't do as well as hoped.

QUICK VIEW:

Add:

Junior Spivey: He is putting up great stats right now and I expect him to continue to do that for the rest of the season.
Damian Miller: he is really hitting the ball well right now. If you look at his stats he's HR's and RBI's are amazing and I think he AVG will start to rise soon. With catcher being such a hard spot to fill Miller is a great player to have on your team.
Danny Bautista: Bautista seems to be playing most of the time be it in LF or CF. He is also putting up very good stats. If you need a 4th or 5th outfielder I would recommend Danny Bautista.

Hold:

Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling and Luis Gonzalez (do I really have to explain?)
Damain Miller: a good starter for any fantasy team.
Junior Spivey: see Damian Miller.

Trade:

Byung-Hyung Kim: he won't have much of a job when Mantei comes back so trade him now when his value is high.

Drop:

Jay Bell: don't count on him getting his job back.

Latest Team Info

After starting the season with 2 wins the D-Backs were quick to follow that up with 2 loses, hopefully this isn’t how it is going to be all year. Tony Womack is on fire right now he is hitting for avg. and is getting RBIs, I would suggest picking him up now because of this and the fact that he is as fast as anyone in the league and capable of stealing 60 bases. I talked to Junior Spivey on Tuesday and he said that he expects to start until Matt Williams comes back at the all-star break, he would be a good addition to your team. Steve Finley has been on a home run tear as of late and would help you out if you needed a power hitter. Also if you didn’t know Craig Counsell look like he is going to be the every day 3B man until Matt Williams gets back

Local Perspective

Fans in the valley of the sun have gotten rather riled up about AZ republic writer Pedro Gomez article called “The D-Backs make mockery of the Game”. He starts off the article, "Just as this organization has managed to do so many times since it came into existence, the Diamondbacks simply could not resist the temptation to make a mockery of the game.” The only time in the article he is specific about how they made a “mockery” of the game is when he talked about Baxter our mascot popping out of the trophy. He later refers to Bank One Ballpark as an “ Oversized airplane hangar”. He also said that the diamondbacks should take and lesson in humility from the Yankees. It is my opinion that when you win the World Series you should be able to celebrate it and that’s what the ceremonies were all about.

RUMOR MILL:

No real rumors except that there is suppose to be a price on Pedro Gomez head.

INJURIES:

Matt Williams out until the all-star break. Greg Colbrunn out for 3-5 weeks, Bell on the 15 day DL Matt Mantei and Armando Reynoso are both on the 60 day DL, Erubiel Durazo is out for about 6-7 weeks with a broken hand

ON THE FARM:

Scott Hairston in 2001 Hairston was the junior college player of the year. In the same year he was taken by the diamondbacks in the third round of the June amateur draft. He started his minor league career with the rookie league team Missoula where he put up very good numbers. Baseball America lists him as one of the 3 top prospects in the diamondbacks farm system. Keep an eye on him he will start the year in AA south bend but he could be a force in years to come at the SS position.

QUICK VIEW:
Add: Miguel Batista, Junior Spivey, Steve Finley, Tony Womack, Damain Miller (if you need a catcher)
Drop: Matt Williams, Rick Helling, Jay Bell and Greg Colbrunn
Hold: Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Luis Gonzalez.
Trade: Byung-Hyung Kim he will help you for a while but as soon as Mantei comes back he is a middle reliever, trade him when you can.

Bob Brenley announced his opening day line-up it is as follows

Tony Womack, shortstop

Outfielders: Danny Bautista, David Dellucci, Steve Finley, Luis Gonzalez, Jose Guillen and Quinton McCracken.

No real amazing things here everyone who was expected to be here is here and no one who wasn’t expected to is so this is rather anti-climatic.

Junior Spivey has earned the starting job his is hitting .381 with 2 hr 11 RBI 24 hits and has a .603 slugging % I would seriously consider picking him up.

Erubiel Durazo is hurt for 6 weeks to bad to because he was tearing it up in spring

Todd Stottlemyre will start on April 9th and I hope he doesn’t do well because I want Brian Anderson and Miguel Batista both in the rotation. I am sure I will receive hate mail on this subject but what ever.

Latest Team News
Curt Schilling had a poor outing on Saturday night allowing 8 runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. Greg Colbrunn will undergo surgery to remove a bone chip in his elbow. This could give Durazo some extra at bats. The team hopes he will be back in 3-5 weeks. Rick Helling has had three consecutive horrible starts. In 91/3 innings he has given up 15 runs leaving him with an era over 14.00. Junior Spivey is continuing to hit the ball well and play solid defense and it now looks like he will make the team as a back up second baseman.

Local Perspective
Regardless of Curt's poor start he is a popular as ever. I was reading the other day that Randy Johnson is one of the 15 most hated players of all time both by the fans and by the media. I don't know where they get that because Randy is one of the most popular people in Arizona both with the fans and the media.

Rumor Mill
Craig Counsell was seen playing first in spring training could he start there and put grace at third? The rumor of the week is Durazo to Philly for Rolen but I don't think it's going to happen. Bench coach Bob Melvin is in the middle of lots of coaching rumors he would make a excellent Manager and I would be amazed to see him in a different uniform come April 1st.

Battle For Right
In the battle for the starting job in right it looks like Danny Bautista is ahead Jose Guillen has put up some good stats but I don't think that he will get the job. David Dellucci has missed much of camp due to the flu and that has knocked him almost out of the running

Injuries
Greg Colbrunn will miss 3-5 weeks due to elbow surgery. Matt Williams out until the all star break. Jay Bell has a cramp in his leg and his status is day to day.

On the Farm
Brad Cresse, One of the top catchers in the minor leagues Cresse has been compared to Mike Piazza both offensively and defensively. He batted 289 with 14 HR and 81 RBI in AA El Paso. Keep an eye on Cresse he will be a force in years to come.

Quick View
Add: Miguel Batista
Jay Bell - Will start at 3B
Junior Spivey
Drop: Matt Williams (new)
Greg Colbrunn (new)
Rick Helling (new

Archived Reports

Todd Stottlemyre was back in a game Monday the 3rd for the first time since September 21, 2000. He said he felt good but if that is his version of good I don't want to see his bad. He went one inning allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two. Still, it is a positive step for Todd and I think we will see him coming out of the pen this year.
Matt Williams broke his leg Monday the 24th of February. He had surgery on Tuesday. He is not expected back before the all star break. Durazo is pushing for at bats this spring and may be succeeding. On Thursday, he went 3 for 3 with a homer and has been hitting very well this spring. I don't expect him to get a starting job this year. Junior Spivey has had a hot spring so far and if he continues it is not out of the question that he would be the starting 2b man; if he is, draft him.

Rumor Mill
The off season has been rather quiet for the D-Backs except for the David Wells problem. The only real rumor going around right now is with Durazo. It has him going to the A's for Dye or the Braves for Wes Helms. In my opinion I don't think that Durazo is going anywhere; but, if he does pick him up immediately - he is a 40 HR/100 RBI/300 AVG type of player if he gets playing time.

Local Perspective
Fans have been surprisingly happy about Matt Williams' injury. I don't know why that is because the D-backs don't have a good back up; their best bet is Jay Bell. Craig Counsell is very popular with the fans right now. If you counted his fan clubs he likely has more than Randy, Curt and Gonzo combined, This could result in more playing time at second base.

On The Farm
One's to Watch in 2002:
Lyle Overbay: This guy is great; he is the Diamondbacks' 1B of the future. Hopefully, Durazo will not get in his way when it becomes Overybay's time to take over the 1B job. Look for him in 2003
Alex Cintron: When given the chance, Cintron can play. I don't expect him to make the roster out of spring training but look for a mid-season call-up

Quick View
Add: Miguel Batista (new)
Jay Bell (new) - Will start at 3B
Junior Spivey (new)
Drop: Matt Williams (new)
