NFL Mock Draft
March 15, 2007
By James Meyerriecks

by Gordon Lee

1) Oakland: JaMarcus Russell (QB), LSU - With Russell's recent workout for NFL Scouts I cannot see any possible way he slips past the first pick. His arm strength is even better than expected and is fairly accurate. Al Davis isn't known for drafting quarterbacks in the first round but Russell can give Oakland a chance to go to the next level. There is some discussion on if the Raiders can make this pick financially. For their future they can and it may be made easier by the departure of Randy Moss.

2) Detroit: Brady Quinn (QB), ND - This is the most unknown position of the draft. Most think that the Lions are dead set on Wisconsin Tackle Joe Thomas. Not in my eyes. The Lions want it known to teams below them that they hold the pick to acquire a franchise quarterback in Brady Quinn. Houston, Cleveland and Minnesota are more than likely calling to trade up to grab him but the price will be steep. Matt Millen is desperate. Can he pass up on a franchise quarterback if a trade does not occur considering that five NFC teams behind them could grab him including division rival Minnesota?

3) Cleveland: Adrian Peterson (RB), OK - Upper management wants a quarterback. I don't think one falls here. Unless they trade for one, they grab a franchise back that can help them win right away. Cleveland has Jamal Lewis locked under a one-year deal but he isn't the same back that he once was.

4) Tampa Bay: Calvin Johnson (WR), GT - Sure the Bucs have to look into the future and plan for life without Simeon Rice and Greg Spires but Johnson could prove to be too tempting. Again, a trade is a possibility, but Joey Galloway is getting older and a vertical threat can help greatly.

5) Arizona: Joe Thomas (T), Wisc - The Cardinals lost tackle Leonard Davis so they snag Joe Thomas to protect Matt Leinart and help open holes for Edgerrin James.

6) Washington: Gaines Adams (DE), Clem - The Skins are in desperate need of a pass rusher and Adams would provide help in that area.

7) Minnesota: Marshawn Lynch (RB), Cal - The Vikings had the top run defense last year but were also among the worst pass defenses, so they could draft defense. Looking at Minnesota, they just don't have a franchise-type player on the offensive side of the ball. They could trade up for Quinn or they could draft their back of the future who can catch the ball out of the backfield. The Vikings have a lot of money already invested in their defensive line and big money Fred Smoot was a disappointment. I think they go offense this time.

8) Houston: Levi Brown (T), Penn St - Quarterback is a problem here. If they can't grab Quinn they'll look to solidify their most glaring hole in the offensive line. Houston just signed Ahman Green filled one hole; now he needs some holes to run through.

9) Miami: Alan Branch (DT), Michigan - The Dolphins have to get younger on the defensive line. Branch is a cornerstone tackle to build it around. The Fins could also use a cornerback in this position but I don't see any that will make it worth passing on Branch.

10) Atlanta: LaRon Landry (S), LSU - Defensive End Patrick Kerney is gone but there is depth in this draft at that position. Rich Mckay wants to build around the Falcons' defense, and a safety who ran a 4.3 40 would be an impressive acquisition here.

11) San Francisco: Ted Ginn Jr. (WR), OSU - Young QB Alex Smith showed life towards the end of last season with help from Frank Gore and Vernon Davis. The Niners still need a vertical threat. Ginn helps there and in the return game.

12) Buffalo: Leon Hall (CB), Michigan - If Marshawn Lynch were to fall, he'd probably fall here due to the McGahee situation. I think he's gone by now. In that case I see the Bills snagging Hall to replace departed Nate Clements. Hall is very physical and would fit in well.

13) St. Louis: Adam Carriker (DE), Neb - Carriker is a physical defensive lineman. Perhaps the most physical in the draft. St. Louis was next to last in the league in run defense last year. He helps them here.

14) Carolina: Brandon Meriweather (S), Miami - The Panthers have a nine-year and a ten-year veteran at both Safety positions. This may be the time for them to get younger. They couldn't run the ball last year but there are no prospects to help them in that area.

15) Pittsburgh: Jarvis Moss (DE), FLA - Moss has fantastic speed for a defensive end and is very athletic. This helps Mike Tomlin change the 3-4 into the 4-3 scheme.

16) Green Bay: Greg Olsen (TE), Miami - The Pack could use a back but they need to trade up, get into discussions with another team, or draft one in later rounds. Brett Favre is back and could use a gifted tight end who has 4.5 speed and soft hands to catch down the seam. Bubba Franks' hasn't been the target he was earlier in his career and back-up David Martin is gone. Olsen seems to be the best fit.

17) Jacksonville: Paul Posluszny (LB), Penn St - When Mike Peterson went down last year there was a major drop-off at linebacker. Jack Del Rio can fix that here.

18) Cincinnati: Lawrence Timmons (LB), FLA St. - With David Pollack probably not returning and the antics of Odell Thurman, this is what the Bengals need. Timmons is a nice character guy that should stay out of trouble and a tackling machine, and would be a good fit for the legally troubled franchise.

19) Tennessee: Amobi Okoye (DT), Louis - If he falls this far, Okoye would go a long way in helping the 30th ranked rush defense.

20) N.Y. Giants: Joe Staley (T), Cent. Mich - The Giants do need a complement to Brandon Jacobs but there aren't any here. Instead they fill the holes left by Luke Petitgout and Bob Whitfield.

21) Denver: Tony Ugoh (T), Ark - Tatum Bell may be gone, but the Broncos have the history of creating backs out of nothing. Ugoh would fill one hole on the line left by George Foster.

22) Dallas: Patrick Willis (DE), Miss - The Boys' could look for a Safety here but I think they don't pass on another End. Willis is probably the guy they look at.

23) Kansas City: Aaron Ross (CB), Texas - The Chiefs are in a position to plan for the future with veterans Ty Law and Patrick Surtain. For years, the Chiefs could have used a playmaker at receiver but they look the other way. I think they do the same thing here.

24) New England: Jon Beason (LB), Miami - With the Patriots now set at receiver, Beason seems like he will be the man for the Pats. Belichick likes depth, and this gives them some at linebacker.

25) N.Y. Jets: Darrelle Revis (CB), Pitt - Revis has good speed and would be a good fit. He's a hometown boy.

26) Philadelphia: Dwayne Jarrett (WR), USC - Philly lost Donte' Stallworth to the Pats and with Mcnabb coming off of a torn ACL, they need to get him some help to stay towards the top of the NFC East.

27) New Orleans: Zach Miller (TE), AZ State - With the loss of Joe Horn, I can see them picking up Dwayne Bowe here, but I think tight end is a much more glaring hole. Miller is from a college conference built around the passing game and is a big target.

28) New England: Daymeion Hughes (CB), Cal - Hughes is a Belichick kind of kid. He works hard and would allow the Pats to get younger on the frame of their defense. The 2006 All-American, Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, and Lott Trophy winner plays deceptively fast and is great in man-to-man.

29) Baltimore: Justin Blalock (T), Texas - Ogden may be gone after this year and the Ravens can't afford for tackle to be a hole in the future. Blalock's stock rises even higher due to his character and work ethic.

30) San Diego: Dwayne Bowe (WR), LSU - Bowe has the size and speed to fit in well with the Chargers. He would give Philip Rivers' a nice outside target.

31) Chicago: Ben Grubbs (G), Auburn - Lance Briggs is the ongoing story in Chicago, so a linebacker is a very strong possibility here. People tend to forget that one of the more horrific showings was in the Superbowl by guard Roberto Garza. This puts an end to that.

32) Indianapolis: Anthony Spencer (DE/LB), Purdue - The Colts still need better defensive instincts to make it an easier ride for them during the regular season. He has space to add 10 pounds and suffer no loss of quickness.

nice work, I didnt expect lynch to be projected that high.

The only pick I disagree with is Lynch. I still believe he will fall to the Packers. Or like you said, the Vikings are gonna trade up and get Quinn. Either way, I dont see Lynch bieng taken until pick 16 to the Packers

Yes, a mock draft!

Few general comments... I hang out on a few draft boards so I have managed to get a decent feel of what teams need/want.

7. With that money in Taylor I think they may go after a guy like Jamaal Anderson at DE... Granted his stock isn't as high as it initially was. Maybe Ginn (although I think he's a Troy Williamson clone).

11. SF's offense isn't spectacular but their defense is even worse, their Dline especially. Adam Carriker is a perfect 3-4 DE so IMO that's the route they take.

12. Via me doubting MIN goes RB, Lynch falls here and as you said they'd take him.

14. Merriweather has top 15 potential but I'm not sure he goes this high via the gun incident and FLA international incident. With that said, I could see a team falling in love with him despite that and taking him.

18. As a Bengals fan the loss of Pollack and Odell being an idiot really doesn't impact the decision of if we took Timmons. He would be drafted to play WLB and we're fine at MLB/SLB at the moment in spite of Odell/Pollack. Love the pick but supposedly our FO is in love with Okoye (who I think doesn't make it past St. Louis).

22. Patrick Willis is a MLB.

Regardless I like the mock and think it's cool we have one on FIC. Hopefully a new one goes up just before the draft?

Nice job Gordon. I honestly think the Lions will draft Joe Thomas though. If they need a QB they can get Drew Stanton in the second round or wait until next season. The Lions do have Kitna.

I don't understand why Minnesota needs a RB. Don't they have Chester Taylor?

The Patriots have recently worked out some safeties. I think they'll draft a safety and a cornerback in the first round followed by a linebacker in the third round.

Calvin Johnson. If he slips to #4, I'd bet someone moves up to grab him (Atlanta? SF? Minnesota?).

Levi Brown. I don't think he'll crack the top 10. I think there is no way the Texan's take an O-line position in the first round. Defense is the biggest problem and will be addressed first (either Branch or Landry).

There's no way the Saints are going to draft a tight end. We are REAL desperate for a DB to replace Fred Thomas. He killed us last season. We already have a deadly offense.

HAHA exactly. we just signed eric johnson and resigned billy miller were set. I think aaron ross is gonna drop to us. and we'll get him. THOMAS BETTER BE A BACKUP. becuase I dont wanna see him getting burned by reggie wayne on the opening game this year.
[8] strong draft after QB by www.widders.com on 04/04/2007 02:51 amreply
These players should all be gone by the Top 3, and Detroit will not pass on a chance on Ware/Quinn. Detroit will not risk trading down.

1. OAK QB WARE
2. DET QB QUINN
3. CLE RB PETERSON

I think Andre was drafted at least 15 years ago.
