Fantasy Football Player Rankings

Columnist: Jeff Brown

Week Seven Match-ups (UPDATED)
October 22, 2004

Quarterbacks

Plus Play:

Byron Leftwich, Jac -- In its previous three games, Indianapolis has allowed opponents 319 yards passing and 2 passing TDs per game. In his previous game against the Colts, Leftwich set the pace with 318 yards and a passing TD. He’s improved each week, capped by last week’s performance with 298 yards through the air, 25 yards on the ground, 3 total TDs and zero interceptions. Expect more of the same this week.

Kurt Warner, NYG -- The Lions are ranked 28th in pass defense (279 ypg).after Green Bay exposed the Lions for a below-average team with a slew of injuries on that side of the ball. There’s nothing spectacular about Warner’s three TDs in five games, but his one interception and an average of 225 ypg show that he’s ready for a big game, and Detroit’s the target.

Negative Play:

Marc Bulger, St. Louis -- It's tempting to expect Bulger to continue to roll, but the Rams are facing the top passing defense in the league, as Miami has given up just 736 yards (123 ypg) and five TDs this season, despite how much time the Dolphins' defense has spent on the field. Start him, but be aware that his numbers will be sub-par.

Chad Pennington, NYJ -- New England’s passing defense will give up yards (226 ypg), but they allow less then one touchdown pass per week. Pennington has averaged only 223 ypg and has thrown only one TD over the last three weeks. Plus, the last time these two teams met, Pennington threw five interceptions.

Running Backs

Plus Play:

Reuben Droughns, Den -- Cincinnati’s run defense is the worst in the league (160 yards and 2 TDs per game) and Droughns has proven he’s no fluke. Droughns has 68 carries for 369 yards in the last two games, but he has not fumbled this season. A must start.

Amos Zereoue, Oak -- Zereoue should roll against a thoroughly pitiful New Orleans defense, which has allowed 151 ypg and nine rushing TDs this year.

Negative Play:

Rudi Johnson, Cin -- The Broncos will be able to control the game and score points with their ground game, forcing the Bengals to pass late. In addition, Denver has the fourth-ranked run defense (87 ypg).

Travis Henry, Buf -- Willis McGahee has been stealing carries from Henry. Since the Bills face the third-best rushing defense in the Ravens, Henry should sit out.

Wide Receivers

Plus Play:

Marcus Robinson and Nate Burleson, Min -- Even if Randy Moss was going to go full speed Sunday, Culpepper would still heave the ball down the field to this duo. Tennessee has already allowed 11 touchdowns and ranks 26th in the NFL in passing defense (244 ypg). With Moss on the field, Robinson has become a dangerous WR2 threat in the red zone. With Moss out, Robinson and Burleson each move up a spot. Burleson will be the deep threat receiver replacing Moss this weekend.

Jimmy Smith, Jac -- See Leftwich above. Smith is Leftwich’s only target now days, The emergence of Leftwich in recent weeks has returned Smith into a top-10 WR once again.

Negative Play:

Roy Williams, Det -- The Giants have been solid overall against opposing WRs as they have only allowed an average of 113 ypg. Defenses are focusing their coverage towards Williams and it has hurt his production. Expect it to continue.

David Givens, NE -- Givens had performed well this year up until last week when he only had one reception for 17 yards. Plus, he has only scored once this season. Both Givens and Brady will struggle some against this slowly improving Jet passing defense.
