Fantasy Football Player Rankings

Columnist: Jeff Brown

Week Ten Match-ups
November 11, 2005

Quarterbacks

Bye Weeks: Carson Palmer, Aaron Brooks, Drew Brees, Steve McNair

Plus Play:

Matt Hasselbeck, SEA – Hasselbeck has been a steady play the last two games (58%, 382 yards, two TDs and two INTs), despite the explosion of Shaun Alexander recently. Having Bobby Engram back will help. Plus, Hasselbeck was great in his game against St. Louis in Week Five (71%, 316 yards, two TDs and no INTs). The Rams are 26th in the league against the pass (241 ypg) and have allowed the second-most TDs through the air (16). The poor secondary is wasting a good effort from the Rams’ front seven, as they are tied for 10th in sacks (22). Expect another great performance by Hasselback against these Rams.

Kerry Collins, OAK – Over the last three weeks, Collins has played very well (59%, 674 yards, six TDs and two INTs), despite Randy Moss nursing the injury bug. The Raiders will face the 29th-ranked Bronco pass defense (245 ypg), which has surrendered 12 TDs to date.

Jake Plummer, DEN – Plummer and the Bronco offense entered their bye week on top of their game (63%, 309 yards, four TDs and no INTs) with a big win over a good Philly team. The Raiders’ pass defense is adequate (22nd, 220 ypg, 11 TDs surrendered), and has played well the last three weeks (173 ypg, with 12 sacks). However, Denver protects the mobile Plummer well (with a second-least 10 sacks), and should continue to click at a red-hot level against the Raiders.

Michael Vick, ATL – Everything with Vick is relative – such as saying his younger brother Marcus has the better throwing arm (who doesn’t?). FOR HIM, last week’s game against Miami was monumental – he completed more than 18 passes for the first time in three years (22/31) and passed for more than 200 yards for the first time this season (228). If Atlanta elects to throw the ball this week as well, it will be against a good Packer pass defense – one that is ranked 12th against the pass (179 ypg), but one that has allowed the fourth-most TDs to date (14). It may be a rare comfortable play for Vick owners.

Kelly Holcomb, BUF – If you’re hurting for a bye-week QB, Holcomb might be your guy. The Bills passing game has picked up of late and the squad is coming off a bye week, giving them the opportunity to make their offense more balanced. Holcomb has done well the last two games (65%, 422 yards, three TDs and one INT). The Bills face the 31st-ranked Chiefs this week (261 ypg), who has surrendered the second-most TDs to date (16). This is a prime chance for Holcomb to exploit this defense.

Negative Play:

Tom Brady, NE -- Brady has been playing well the last two weeks (67%, 464 yards, four TDs and no INTs), but he has not received much help from the rest of his squad. The Dolphins are mediocre against the pass (195 ypg, 14th), but have responded of late, with 11 sacks in three games. This should be a solid start for Brady, but not a spectacular one.

Brett Favre, GB – With the Packer running game in shambles, Favre should put the ball up a lot. That is not always a good thing, however (remember his five-interception game two weeks ago?). He has struggled the last three weeks (67%, 808 yards, three TDs, six INTs), but his completion percentage would be stratospheric if his WRs would catch the balls they drop. He will face a mediocre defense in Atlanta (204 ypg, 17th) which has held its opponents to an average of 149 ypg the last two weeks).

Byron Leftwich, JAX – Leftwich has made his passes count the last two weeks (66%, 431 yards, three TDs, one INT). The Ravens’ pass defense has been slipping of late (164 ypg, fourth for the season – 175 ypg allowed the last three weeks). Still, the Ravens will be too strong for Leftwich.

Mark Brunell, WAS – The shine has worn off of Brunell, as he no longer is tallying two or three TDs per game – he’s been rather pedestrian the last three weeks (58%, 541 yards, three TDs, and one INT). This week, he faces the second-ranked pass defense of Tampa (161 ypg), which has allowed just three passing TDs this year.

1 Peyton Manning, IND
2 Matt Hasselbeck, SEA

27 Kyle Boller, BAL
28 Cody Pickett, SF

Running Backs

Bye Weeks: Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry, Antowain Smith, Aaron Stecker, LaDainian Tomlinson, Chris Brown, Travis Henry

Plus Play:

Stephen Davis, CAR – Davis has slipped of late in his yardage production, but he has been stunning in the red zone (3.1 ypc, but 11 TDs). That’s in addition to DeShaun Foster being ineffective (2.6 ypc, no TDs). This week, the Panthers face the 30th-ranked Jets rush defense (140 ypg) that has given up 11 TDs on the ground (27th). Expect another big game by Davis.

Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell, DEN –Anderson and Bell were just as successful as Plummer in the Broncos’ last game against Philly (35 carries, 233 yards, three TDs combined). As a group, Denver leads the league in yards per carry (5.3). They should continue to roll this week, despite facing a decent Oakland squad against the run (116 ypg, 17th – 22nd in rushing TDs surrendered (nine)).

Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson, CHI – With Thomas Jones expected to miss this week, the burden falls upon Benson and Peterson. They both did well against the Saints last week (a combined 6.9 ypc for 137 yards and a TD). They will face the 14th-ranked Niners run defense (110 ypg) that has allowed a second-worst 12 rushing TDs to date.

Duce Staley, PIT – Staley is expected to start as Willie Parker and Jerome Bettis are questionable. Staley’s debut last week was successful (15 carries for 76 yards, one TD). Having the pitiful Charlie Batch under center can only help. This week, the Steelers face the 28th-ranked Browns run defense (129 ypg), which has been decent in the red zone (four TDs, tied for eighth).

Greg Jones, JAX – Jones is expected to start in place of Fred Taylor. Jones did well last week when Taylor went down (3.9 ypc, one TD). The Ravens’ run defense is without Ray Lewis and is not the stiff squad that they have been in the past (99 ypg, 10th-ranked), including 114 ypg over the last three weeks. Jones should still be a good bye-week play, but watch reports to make sure Taylor’s out for the game.

Sam Gado, GB – The Packers really have had to dig deep into their corps of RBs. After Tony Fisher went down with a rib injury, and ReShard Lee couldn’t hold onto the ball, Gado and his one career carry was thrust into the forefront. He did well (26 carries, 62 yards, one TD), and if Fisher remains out for a significant period of time, Gado could be a good emergency back-up to have on your bench. This week, he faces the 18th-ranked Falcon run defense (118 ypg).

Negative Play:

Brian Westbrook, – The Eagles are last in the league in rushing the football. Luckily, Westbrook is still a viable fantasy back when you add in his receiving yards (806 total yards, five total TDs). But this week, the Eagles go against the sixth-ranked Cowboy run defense (89 ypg), which, ironically, is Westbrook’s highest rushing total of the season. In Week Five, Dallas held Philly to 19 yards rushing on nine attempts. This defensive front is tied for first in fewest rushing TDs allowed (two).

Julius Jones, DAL – In an otherwise good match-up for the Cowboys (the Philly defense is 19th in the league both against the run (118 ypg) and rushing TDs allowed (eight)), Jones is expected to start, but see limited action. With the load being carried by Jones, Marion Barber and Tyson Thompson, it’s hard to pin-point which back will get the most work. It shouldn’t be Jones, however.

Domanick Davis, HOU – Davis did well the last time these two team matched up (28 carries, 98 yards, one TD), but he is battling an ankle injury, so he may be limited. Nevertheless, Houston goes up against a rolling Indy defense – one that is 11th-ranked against the run (99 ypg), and has allowed just 83 ypg over its last two games. They are also tied for first in rushing TDs surrendered (two).

Melwelde Moore, MIN – Moore injured his wrist last week, so he, too, may be limited. Working against him, though, is the reemergence of Michael Bennett, who responded last week with 106 yards on 18 carries and a receiving TD. He has good games in stretches, so Mike Tice’s favorite might get the nod. Either way, the Vikings face the ninth-ranked Giants’ defense (98 ypg) at Giants Stadium, so it will be a tough battle.

1 Shaun Alexander, SEA
2 Edgerrin James, IND
3 Larry Johnson, KC
4 Tiki Barber, NYG
5 Willis McGahee, BUF
6 Lamont Jordan, OAK
7 Steven Jackson, STL
8 Warrick Dunn, ATL
9 Stephen Davis, CAR
10 Brian Westbrook, PHI
11 Mike Anderson, DEN
12 Corey Dillon, NE
13 Clinton Portis, WAS
14 Cedric Benson, CHI

17 Curtis Martin, NYJ
18 Cadillac Williams, TB
19 Ronnie Brown, MIA
20 Julius Jones, DAL
21 Reuben Droughns, CLE
22 Kevin Jones, DET
23 Domanick Davis, HOU
24 Greg Jones, JAX
25 Sam Gado, GB
26 Jamal Lewis, BAL
27 Ricky Williams, MIA
28 Kevan Barlow, SF
29 Michael Bennett, MIN
30 DeShaun Foster, CAR
31 Marion Barber, DAL
32 Mewelde Moore, MIN
33 Adrian Peterson, CHI
34 Marcel Shipp, ARI
35 Dominic Rhodes, IND
36 Chester Taylor, BAL
37 J.J. Arrington, ARI
38 Shawn Bryson, DET
39 Brandon Jacobs, NYG
40 Alvin Pearman, JAX
41 Frank Gore, SF

44 Ladell Betts, WAS
45 Artose Pinner, DET

47 Jonathan Wells, HOU

49 Marshall Faulk, STL
50 William Henderson, GB

Wide Receivers

Bye Weeks: Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Chris Henry, Joe Horn, Donte Stallworth, Az-Zahir Hakim, Keenan McCardell, Eric Parker, Drew Bennett, Brandon Jones, Courtney Roby

Plus Play:

Marvin Harrison, IND – Harrison has been on fire the last three weeks (27 targets, 16 receptions, 193 yards, three TDs). This week, the Colts will face the 18th-ranked Texans pass defense (208 ypg) that has allowed 11 passing TDs this season. That number will definitely will go up this week.

Deion Branch, NE – David Givens has been getting more targets of late (27 compared to Branch’s 25), but Branch has gotten into the end zone three times, compared to Givens’ one – including one in each of the last two games. He has a good shot of reaching the end zone once again this week.

Jerry Porter, OAK – Porter has benefited from the injuries to Randy Moss (23 targets, 17 receptions, 234 yards, three TDs in the last three weeks). Against the weak Bronco secondary, that success should continue for Moss.

Chris Chambers, MIA – Chambers, who has made the most of his limited chances the last three weeks (nine receptions, 153 yards, two TDs), should continue to find the end zone against the 27th-ranked passing defense of New England (242 ypg), which has allowed the second-most TDs this season (16).

Joe Jurevicius, SEA – Jurevicius has benefited from the absence of Darrell Jackson and Bobby Engram the last four games (29 targets, 22 receptions, 251 yards, three TDs). Engram is back, but the luster on Jurevicius should last at least another week against the 26th-ranked Rams pass defense.

Muhsin Muhammad, CHI – Kyle Orton has been making a charge for Rookie of the Year lately, and Muhammad is benefiting (10 receptions, 173 yards, one TD the last three weeks). The reason for his selection, though, is that the Bears are facing the pitiful Niners pass defense (307 ypg, 32nd) that has surrendered the most TDs to date (17).

Negative Play:

Santana Moss, WAS – While Brunell has been slipping of late, so has Moss, although he is still a good play (25 targets, 16 receptions, 225 yards, one TD). He, too, will have a tough go of it against the fourth-ranked Tampa defense.

Donald Driver and Antonio Chatman, GB – With the reemergence of the Packer TE passing game (Bubba Franks and Donald Lee combined for 34 targets, 25 receptions, 192 yards, one TD), Driver and Chatman’s productivity has dropped (52 targets, 35 receptions, 425 yards, two TDs). The Falcons are fourth in sacks made (24), so expect Favre to continue to dish the ball to the TEs and limit the WRs.

Hines Ward, PIT -- Charlie Batch has meant death for the Steeler WRs – the corps totaled three receptions last week. He should make Cleveland’s 19th-ranked pass defense (210 ypg) look great.

Jimmy Smith, JAX – Ernest Wilford and Matt Jones has seen their targets increase (from eight total in Weeks Five and Six to 14 each the last two weeks, while Smith’s has decreased (from 16 to 10). That’s not expected to change against the fourth-ranked Ravens’ defense.

Derrick Mason, BAL – UH, OH!!! Kyle Boller’s back!!! That spells DOOM for Mason. It’s not that Anthony Wright was all that great, but Mason had developed into a decent No. 2/great No. 3 fantasy WR at Baltimore – something that wasn’t expected with Boller under center. You should be careful starting Mason this week, as the Ravens will face the third-ranked Jaguars’ pass defense (162 ypg) that has made eight sacks over the last two weeks.

Andre Johnson, HOU – David Carr completed just six passes in nine attempts for 48 yards in Week Seven against the Colts, and it’s hard to expect things to get much better at Indy. The Colts are ninth in the league against the pass (180 ypg) with eight TDs surrendered and a league-leading 28 sacks made. As usual, the Texans lead the league in sacks allowed (43).
