Week Eleven Match-ups
November 18, 2005
Quarterbacks
Plus Play:
Brett Favre, GB – With a rare strong running performance this season for the Packers by (The Wrath of) Samkon Gado, Favre had a strong performance against Atlanta (67%, 252 yards, 1 TD and one INT). In Week Seven, Favre also did well against Minnesota (77%, 315 yards, two TDs and no INTs) and should continue that level of performance this week at home. The Vikings are the league’s 26th-ranked pass defense (231 ypg) and has surrendered the third-most passing scores (16). Green Bay is finally clicking, and should continue this week.
Kurt Warner, ARI – Warner returned last week from injury to post a good day (64%, 359 yards, one TD and no INTs) without Anquan Boldin and Bryant Johnson. In Week Two, Warner performed well agaisnt St. Louis (69%, 327 yards, no TDs and one INT). The Rams are the 27th-ranked passing defense (241 ypg) and has allowed the second-most passing TDs (17). If Boldin can play this week, this is even a better match-up.
Mark Brunell, WAS – Brunell has continued to find Mike Sellers in the end zone and connected for Sellers’ fifth TD reception this season. Brunell got back on track last week against Tampa Bay (65%, 226 yards, two TDs and two INTs). Oakland has been below average against the pass this season (219 ypg, 23rd) and has not made an interception in the last three games.
Trent Green, KC – Green expectedly struggled against the top-flight Buffalo pass defense (58%, 220 yards, no TDs and three INTs), but has performed well overall over the last three weeks (64%, 802 yards, three TDs and three INTs). This week, though, he faces the 22nd-ranked pass defense of Houston (217 ypg) that also has not made an interception over the last three weeks.
Negative Play:
Jake Plummer, DEN -- Before this season, the word “flawless” and the name “Jake Plummer” didn’t even belong in the same paragraph. Not the case this season, as he has put together a great season (three INTs all season, and 67%, 514 yards, five TDs and no INTs the last two weeks). However, the Broncos will face the seventh-ranked Jets pass defense – the only thing that has gone right for the Jets this year (169 ypg, with the fourth-fewest TDs surrendered (seven)).
Drew Brees, SD – Brees has been clicking of late (64%, 594 yards, four TDs and two INTs over the last two games). But he faces the second-ranked Bills this week (158 ypg), which has the second-fewest TDs surrendered (six). The unit has made three INTs and nine sacks over their last two games.
Jake Delhomme, CAR – Delhomme has been solid the last three weeks (62%, 676 yards, five TDs and two INTs), but he will go against the Bears’ third-ranked pass defense (158 ypg), which is tied for fourth in TD passes allowed (seven).

Running Backs
Plus Play:
Clinton Portis, WAS – Portis has been very unpredictable this season. Despite the fact that he had his best performance of the season last week against the Giants (144 yards and a TD), he has yet to string back-to-back 100-yard games this year. Oakland is ranked 19th against the run (116 ypg), but has given up 125 ypg the last three weeks. The Raiders are ranked 22nd in TDs surrendered (10). Portis has a decent chance of getting that back-to-back string going.
Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell, DEN – Now that Priest Holmes is out for the season, the best two-headed RB in the league is in Denver. They are third in the league in yards per carry (5.0) and second in rushing (165 ypg). Over the last two games, they have combined for 68 carries, 342 yards and four TDs. This week, the Broncos face the Jets’ 29th-ranked run defense (135 ypg), which has allowed the second-most TDs this season (12).
Samkon Gado, GB – Gado was even better than predicted last week (108 total yards and three TDs). He should even remain the feature back if Tony Fisher returns. This week, the Pack faces the 26th-ranked Vikings run defense (127 ypg) which has allowed 11 rushing scores this season.
Greg Jones, JAX – Jones has been a capable fill-in for Fred Taylor this season (4.3 ypc, 183 yards, two TDs in two starts). The Titans’ run defense has weakened of late. Overall, they are ranked 16th (113 ypg), but have given up 131 ypg the last two games.
Reuben Droughns, CLE – Droughns finally broke his scoring drought this season. Last week, he had 123 total yards and a TD against a tough Steeler defense. This week, he faces a mediocre Dolphins’ defense, which ranks 18th in the league (115 ypg). It looks like the Cleveland running game is starting to take hold a bit.
Negative Play:
Willis McGahee, BUF – McGahee has been kept out of the end zone the last two weeks, despite a solid 223 total yards during that span. This week, though, he faces the top-ranked San Diego run defense (80 ypg).
Thomas Jones, CHI – Jones should be back in the lineup this week, but he will face a tough opponent in Carolina. The Panthers sport the second-best run defense (81 ypg) and has allowed just five scores so far this season. He will have a tough go against a strong defensive front.
Stephen Davis, CAR – Davis has found the end zone five times the last three weeks, but he remains a paltry ground gainer (just 3.0 ypc). This week, the Panthers face the eighth-ranked Bears defense (95 ypg) which has allowed the fewest rushing scores in the league (two).
Rudi Johnson, CIN – Johnson appears to have regained the job of being the focus of the Bengal running game, as he has had 51 carries the last two games, compared to Chris Perry’s six. However, the Bengals face the ninth-ranked Colts’ run defense (97 ypg) which has allowed the second-fewest TD this season (three), and has been even stronger of late (59 ypg over two games).
Chris Brown, TEN – Brown has been decent for the Titans of late (213 total yards and two TDs in his last two games). While the Jags have been below-average against he run (118 ypg), they have allowed the second-fewest rushing scores this season (three). Brown may get some yardage, but don’t expect him to score.

Wide Receivers
Plus Play:
Joey Galloway, – Galloway remains Chris Simms’ favorite target (38 targets, 20 receptions, 363 yards and three TDs the last three weeks). Atlanta’s pass defense is only average (209 ypg, 16th), and has stopped getting to the QB lately (no sacks the last two weeks). The Simms/Galloway connection should continue to find success.
Joe Horn and Donte Stallworth, NO – The Saints’ passing game has not done anything to deserve promotion, but this is mainly for the state of the Patriots’ secondary – NE just placed their sixth DB on the injured list this season. The defense has allowed 255 ypg this season (31st) and has given up the most passing TDs thus far (18). In addition, the Patriots have allowed 309 ypg passing the last three weeks and have made just two sacks during that span (30th overall with 13 sacks). So it couldn’t be much better of a match-up for the Saints.
Terry Glenn, DAL – Glenn and Drew Bledsoe has cooled off recently, but so has the Detroit defense. Detroit ranks 15th in the league against the pass (205 ypg), but over the last three weeks, they have allowed 232 ypg and have not made an interception. Don’t be surprised in this duo connects for a deep pass this week.
Bobby Engram and Joe Jurevicius, SEA – This duo continues to perform for QB Matt Hasselbeck – over the last two weeks, Engram has been targeted 16 times for nine receptions and 94 yards; Jurevicius has been targeted 13 times for seven receptions, 58 yards and a TD. So it’s great news that the Seahawks have the treat of facing the league’s worst pass defense of the Niners (280 ypg), which has allowed 17 passing TDs thus far (second-worst in the league).
Eddie Kennison, KC – Kennison continues to see plenty of targets (26 targets, 16 receptions, 216 yards and a TD over the last three weeks). That should continue against the 22nd-ranked Houston pass defense.
Ernest Wilford and Matt Jones, JAX – This duo has risen to the top of the Jaguar passing game (Wilford has had 21 targets, 11 receptions, 244 yards and two TDs, while Jones has had 19 targets, 12 receptions 176 yards and two TDs the last three weeks). Tennessee is the 17th-ranked pass defense (211 ypg), but it has allowed 252 ypg the last two games and is tied for last in passing TDs surrendered (18).
Amani Toomer, NYG – Toomer has become an improving force in the Giants’ passing game (25 targets, 11 receptions, 142 yards and a TD the last three weeks). He even had as many targets as Plaxico Burress last week (12). The Giants face the 24th-ranked Philly defense (217 ypg) that has deteriorated lately (237 ypg allowed and one interception the last three weeks).
Negative Play:
Hines Ward, PIT – Tommy Maddox. Need I say more? Okay, I will. While Baltimore is struggling of late against the pass (199 ypg and one interception the last three weeks), Pittsburgh should put even more emphasis on the run this week – if Maddox can successfully complete the exchange from the center.
Roy Williams, DET – What a game by Williams last week – seven receptions, 117 yards and three TDs! But that was an aberration. That will not be repeated against the tough Dallas pass defense – one that stifled the top-ranked Philly passing game last week. The Cowboys are ranked 12th in the league (192 ypg), but have allowed just 160 ypg the last two weeks.
T. J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN -- Housh has seen his targets drop the last two weeks (12, down from 21 the previous two games), but he’s made the most of them (10 receptions, 138 yards and a TD). Indy has not made an interception in its last three games, but are still strong against the pass (174 ypg, eighth), and lead the league in sacks (31).
Antonio Bryant, CLE – Bryant has done well the last three weeks (25 targets, 12 receptions, 259 yards and a TD). However, Droughns finally found the end zone last week, so the emphasize to the long-awaited running game may be starting to emerge. And Miami’s front seven is strong against the pass (14th, 204 ypg), and have the second-most sacks over the last three weeks (11).
