Week Seven Match-ups
October 20, 2006
Bye Weeks: Chicago, Tennessee, St. Louis, New Orleans, San Francisco, Baltimore
Quarterbacks
Plus Play:
Chad Pennington, NYJ – Pennington is coming off a two-TD week against Miami. Last week, J.P. Losman threw for 200 yards and two TDs against the Jets’ opponent, the Lions. Detroit is ranked 30th against the pass (248 ypg) and has given up the most passing TDs in the league (13). Pennington should have good success this week.
Byron Leftwich, JAX – Leftwich is coming off a bye-week in which he had two weeks to prepare for the 31st-ranked Houston pass defense (273 ypg). This defense has given up 11 passing TDs and has only made one INT. Leftwich threw for 430 yards, five TDs and one INT in the two games before the bye. He will be without Matt Jones, but Reggie Williams has been playing well. Leftwich is listed on the injury report Friday, so his status will have to be monitored. If he's able to play, he will be a great play here.
Negative Play:
David Carr, HOU – Carr had made steady progress during the season, but had a major setback last week against Dallas (128 yards, two INTs). This week, he faces the ninth-ranked Jacksonville (189 ypg) that has allowed just five passing TDs this season. It has made 12 sacks and nine INTs this season as well. It looks like Carr has hit a snag in his development at the moment.
Charlie Frye, CLE – Frye has had some nice starts this season, but he’s far from dependable at this point in his career. In the last two games, he’s thrown for 365 yards, three TDs and four INTs, and it won’t get any easier this week. The Browns face the Broncos, a team that has allowed the fewest points this season (37). Despite ranking only 11th in pass defense (192 ypg), they have allowed just one passing TD all season.

Running Backs
Plus Play:
Kevin Jones, DET – Jones has done very well of late (310 total yards, three TDs the last three weeks) and he will be going up against the 28th-ranked Jets defense (145 ypg) which has allowed a league-high 12 TDs on the ground. Jones should have a big week.
Tatum Bell, DEN – Bell has been improving each week. He gained 94 total yards and scored his first TD last week against Oakland. This week, he faces the 27th-ranked run defense of Cleveland. The Browns have given up at least 86 yards rushing to each No. 1 RB they have faced, and three of them exceeded 100 yards. Bell should do the same.
Negative Play:
Larry Johnson, KC -- Johnson has only totaled three TDs on the ground this season and is averaging just 3.4 ypc. Johnson is still a must start this week, but expect him to continue to struggle as he faces the third-ranked Chargers defense (72 ypg) that has allowed just one rushing TD this season.
Rudi Johnson, CIN -- Johnson hasn’t been setting the world on fire this season (449 total yards, four TDs). This week, he faces a Carolina defense that was horrible early in the season, but has improved as of late. The Panthers are ranked 19th against the run (115 ypg), but the last three weeks, they have allowed just 78 ypg. Plus, they have only allowed three TDs on the ground this year.

Wide Receivers
Plus Play:
Laveranues Coles, NYJ – Coles has averaged 90 yards receiving this season and has totaled three TDs. Last week, he had 106 yards and two scores and should be in for another big game this week.
Santana Moss, WAS – This is a tricky one – Moss has had a roller-coaster season, so he’s hard to predict. Indianapolis’ pass defense is ranked third (159 ypg), but they have allowed seven passing TDs this season. This is because opponents prefer to run against the 32nd-ranked run defense. Washington may elect to run first as well, but this has the makings for Moss to break loose on at least one of his patented long YAC TD receptions.
Negative Play:
Hines Ward, PIT – Ward started to show some signs of life last week (five targets, five receptions, 59 yards, one TD), but he will be up against a tough corner in DeAngelo Hall – a guy that limited Plaxico Burress to four catches for 44 yards last week. While Atlanta is only 13th against the pass (193 ypg), they have only allowed two passing TDs this season.
Braylon Edwards, CLE – If Frye’s going to have a bad week, so will Edwards.
