Fantasy Football Player Rankings

Week Eleven Match-ups
November 17, 2006

Quarterbacks

Plus Play:

Steve McNair, BAL – The firing of OC Jim Fassel appears to be a great move for the Ravens. Since Brian Billick began calling the plays three weeks ago, McNair has posted the following: 66%, 777 yards, five TDs, two INTs. This week, McNair faces a faltering Atlanta pass defense (30th, 233 ypg) and has allowed 11 TD passes thus far. Over its last four games, Atlanta has allowed almost 300 ypg and over two TDs per game. In two career games against the Falcons, McNair has thrown for 311 yards and three TDs.

Seneca Wallace, SEA – Wallace is in line to start this week. Matt Hasselbeck may make practice Friday, which will determine if he plays. If Wallace starts as expected, he is a great play this week. Over the last two games, he has posted 58%, 535 yards, six TDs and two INT, while tacking on 97 yards on the ground. This week, he faces the 24th-ranked Niners defense (221 ypg) that has allowed 16 TD passes this season.

David Carr, HOU – Carr is an average play this week against Buffalo. He has struggled of late (63%, 456 yards, no TD and an INT over three games). What helps his case is that he faces an equally struggling Buffalo pass defense (18th, 212 ypg). Over the last two games, the Bills have allowed 258 ypg while managing just two sacks and two INTs. Carr has a shot to get back on track here if you absolutely need him.

Negative Play:

Ben Roethlisberger, PIT – Big Ben was a great play last week, as he has been playing pretty well of late (when you look at all the numbers (67%, 998 yards, five TDs, seven INTs)). The reason he’s on this list is not because of his play, but because of the match-up. The Steelers face the sixth-ranked pass defense of Cleveland (183 ypg). The main reason the pass defense is so strong is that the run defense is so weak (30th in the league), so the Steelers, with their strong running game, will be running the ball this week. Last year, in Pittsburgh’s 41-0 win over Cleveland, Roethlisberger had just 226 yards passing with one TD.

Eli Manning, NYG – Manning, with his banged up WRs, has only managed 454 yards, two TDs and three INTs the last three weeks. The results aren’t expected to get much better this week as he faces the fifth-ranked Jacksonville pass defense (180 ypg). Over the last three weeks, the Jaguars have allowed an average of 151 ypg and eight points per game while totaling eight sacks and three INTs.

Chad Pennington, NYJ – Pennington’s resurgence this season was brief – over the last five games, he has only averaged 142 ypg. He is very cold, and chances are very good that he won’t warm up against the No. 1 pass defense of Chicago (152 ypg) that has allowed the fewest TD passes in the league (seven).

Running Backs

Plus Play:

Kevin Jones, DET – Jones is just five yards away from cracking the 1,000-yard mark in total yardage this season. Despite a less-than-stellar week last week, he still managed over 100 total yards. Over the last three games, Jones has averaged 184 yards in total offense and almost two TDs a game. The Lions face the 21th-ranked run defense of Arizona (125 ypg) that has allowed 10 rushing TDs this season.

Thomas Jones, CHI – Jones has performed well of late, amassing 350 yards in total offense with two TDs the last three weeks. This week, he faces the 28th-ranked run defense of the Jets (143 ypg) that has allowed the most rushing TDs this season (13).

Edgerrin James, ARI – There has been very little positive going on in the Cardinals’ rushing offense – the team averages a league-worst 2.8 yards per carry. James made a little progress last week, gaining 79 total yards. Lucky for him, the Cards face the 25th-ranked Lions run defense (128 ypg) that has really struggled the last two games (182 ypg allowed).

Negative Play:

Tiki Barber, NYG -- Barber has been playing very well this season, even though he’s only found the end zone once this season. Over the last three games, he has averaged 137 ypg in total offense. This week, he faces an improving Jacksonville run defense. While they are only ranked 14th against the run (104 ypg), over the last four games, the Jaguars have allowed just 91 ypg rushing with a total of two TDs. Tiki will get some yards, but they won’t be as easy as it has been.

Fred Taylor, JAX -- Taylor started the season having gained over 100 total yards with three TDs in six of the first seven games. Over the last two weeks, however, he needed a big receiving game last week to average barely 100 total yards and was held out of the end zone in both games. The Giants have been solid against the run (eighth, 97 ypg).

Warrick Dunn, ATL -- Dunn has been productive, but not at his best of late. Over the last three games, he has averaged 3.5 ypc – well below the league-leading team average of 5.7 ypc. It won’t get easier this week as the Falcons face the second-ranked Ravens run defense (80 ypg).

Wide Receivers

Plus Play:

Marques Colston, NO – Colston has become this season’s Steve Smith – having come from nowhere to become a star. Over the last three weeks, Colston has 27 receptions for 455 yards and three TDs. This week, he faces the 28th-ranked Bengals pass defense (227 ypg). Over the last three games, they have allowed nearly 35 points a game with 282 ypg passing with no INTs.

Donte Stallworth, PHI – Stallworth proved that his hamstring was fully healed for the first time since Week Two with his six-reception, 139-yard, one-TD performance last week. This week, the Eagles face the 25th-ranked pass defense of Tennessee (233 ypg) that has given up a league-worst 17 passing TDs this season.

Javon Walker, DEN – This isn’t a great match-up for Jake Plummer, but Walker has been red-hot of late (12 receptions, 236 yards and four TDs the last three weeks). He should be able to find the end zone this week against the Chargers, whose pass defense has failed as of late. They are ranked 15th against the pass (210 ypg) and have allowed 13 TDs this season. Over the last four games, San Diego has allowed WRs to average 201 receiving and nearly two TDs a game.

Negative Play:

Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, IND – Both Harrison and Wayne are sure starts, but recognize that there has been a subtle shift in the direction of Peyton Manning’s passes. After focusing on Harrison and Wayne throughout the first several games, over the last three weeks, Manning has targeted Dallas Clark and Ben Utecht (34 times, for 24 receptions and 265 yards) and Joseph Addai (15 times, for 12 receptions 83 yards) with increasing frequency. Add to that the Colts will face the ninth-ranked Cowboys pass defense (195 ypg) that has allowed just seven passing TDs thus far, and it would be hard to expect a big game from either WR.

Hines Ward, PIT – If Roethlisberger will be throwing the ball less this week, there will be less passes for Ward to catch.

Laveranues Coles, NYJ – While Pennington has been fading, Coles has as well. Expect that to continue against the Bears.

why you got T. Glenn down at 55 jeff brown?
[2] by AzRookie on 11/17/2006 09:54 pmreply
Maybe cuz he thinks the injury might be lingering and since Romo has started Glenn hasn't been targeted very much and he hasn't had aTD since week 4.

ok, Glenn scored in week 9. and for good measure, yahoo has him at 36, just pointing that out.
[5] by AzRookie on 11/18/2006 02:35 amreply
I guess I meant 1TD since week 4.

Yeah, I'll probably use him on both of my teams even though I think/hope Dallas will be running a lot against the Colts to take advantage of their bad run D and hopefully keep Manning off the field as much as possible.

It'll be nice fantasy wise if it turned into a shoot out. Won't be good for Dallas though.

1) Glenn was targeted the least number of times all season in Weeks Eight and Nine;
2) He missed Week Ten;
3) The emergence of Patrick Crayton -- he has been targeted at least five times in three of the last five games, and he's had more TDs since Week Five than Glenn.
4) Glenn not only has a quad injury, but he has bone-on-bone irritation under his knee cap that will hamper him the rest of the season.

That doesn't mean that Glenn will be worthless the rest of the season. And he might get back on track this week. It is just less likely that he does.

thanks. I was just looking for an explanation, I wasnt aware of the knee irritation. would you say glenn or crayton is a better play than either of these guys...

chris henry
doug gabriel

I know, my recievers are shite. I need all the help I can get.

heres who I have, I start 4, who should I start?

Chad Johnson (must start)
Reggie Brown (must start, I think)
Terry Glenn
Patrick crayton
Doug Gabriel
Chris henry
Devery Henderson

I'd go with:

Chad Johnson
Reggie Brown
Doug Gabriel
Chris Henry

Another thing about the Cowboys WRs is that the Colts run defense is so bad that teams prefer to grind out the running game instead of passing. Jones and Barber have done well, so they should be the Cowboys' focus. But the Colts are susceptible to the long pass, so someone should get a TD reception -- it just should be Owens, and Crayton is just is likely as Glenn to do so, so it's a tough call between them.

CIN, NE and PHI all have great match-ups this week.

Give the Raider defense some love. They are a top 15 fantasy defense this year and the past few weeks they have outscored every other defense in every scoring format. The team sucks, but the defense scores points with the best NFL defenses

They are only ranked five spots out of the "top 15" (oooo!).

They have very solid stats in the passing game, but they are very poor against the run. This week, they go against one of the top two RBs in the game. So, they're average (and on the bottom of the average scale this week).

this is the 1st time I can remember the rankings being challenged this much--- I would agree with pretty much everything, different people have their reasons for thinking certain guys might be better plays in particular weeks, but for the most part the rankings are pretty solid

I don't think they deserve any justification either

nice job!

PITTS defense ranked #7

I don't know, something I my GUT tells me that this is the week the steeler defense turns things around and I am hoping they will dominate this game

You haven't given the Raiders love all year dude, so don't play it off like you have them high because they are facing Larry Johnson. You had them above 20 when they faced the Cardinals vaunted rushing attack. All I was saying was since they have recently outscored every other team in football in terms of fantasy points (that IS what matters, right?) they should have gotten love even before this week, and was just inserting an opinion. I like most of your articles, but why even bother posting some constructive criticism when all you get is a smug response (love the cutesy little emoticon) from a know-it-all guy who isn't right more than half the time anyway.

Nobody is forcing you to use Jeff's rankings. If you dont agree with them, make your decision on your own.

Who gives a crap where the Raiders defense is ranked. If they were the #1 scoring defense the last month, I still wouldnt own them.

Of all things to argue....the Raiders defense? lol

Don't put words in my mouth. You question my reasoning for placing them where I did, and I gave an answer. That doesn't make me a "know-it-all" -- it's giving a response. Was I just supposed to roll over and say "You're right, forgive me"? I should be allowed to defend myself, no matter what you think.

I'm sorry that you don't appreciate my reasoning. That's fine, it's your right. It's my right to defend it without being attacked. They are a average defense overall. They are ranked 13th in standard Yahoo scoring, and that's with a couple of surprisingly solid performances. So, while I would place them higher if they were facing an average running game, I'm an ass because I placed them a few places lower than I would because they are playing against Larry Johnson? Damn.

I don't see you putting yourself out there each week.

Don't diss the emoticons.

dude if you are trusting the raiders deffense to do well against the chiefs you are a crazy sob. The Chiefs have a good offense. LJ, Gonzo, and they have a qb battle with 2 good QB's that means that there will be a lot of points.

Gotta go with the RB in the flex unless it's head-and-shoulders in the WR's favor. I'd go with Jacobs. JAX has been hot and cold against the run this year, and they're running cold of late. The Giants have been strong throughout the year.

While DET has a good match-up with ARI, go with the RB.

I started Terry Glenn and he came through with a solid game. 6 catches for 80 yards or something like that. I guess hes ok.

He had 21 yards until the Cowboys game winning drive. Jeff was dead on, you sir got lucky to get anything.

I guess I agree. for that one drive, he was the focus though. I now have confidence in glenn and Romo finding him.

My plan is to have a preliminary list up before the Thursday games for the rest of the season, then follow it up with a full report as normal on Friday.

My hope is to have these up late each Wednesday night, but I don't know if that will work this week or next week. I was out all day yesterday taking my dad to the doctor, so I haven't even looked at this week's match-ups (and couldn't fairly give accurate advice on your question -- hopefully someone else would chime in ). And next Wednesday, I have to take him to the hospital for tests, and that's expected to take all day. So we'll just have to see how my Thursday/Friday dual report plan works out the next couple of weeks. I'll do my best, though.

your fantasy advice is always greatly appreciated, but please just take this week off and deal with your own situation

I will just put their names in a hat and pick one out for all I care---- good luck with everything with your dad

Thanks. I appreciate that.

I'll still give it a shot this week, though.
