Fantasy Football Player Rankings

Columnist: Jeff Brown

Week Twelve Match-ups (UPDATED)
November 24, 2006

NOTE: Starting this week, the NFL will begin their Thursday schedule. The plan for this column is to publish a preliminary ranking on Thursdays with the final ranking and commentary on Fridays.

Also, the injury designations on the Thursday column is for only the players playing on Thursday. The Friday column will include the complete injury report.

Quarterbacks

Plus Play:

Michael Vick, ATL – This is the make-or-break point of the season for Vick. Vick has historically done very well against New Orleans prior to this season. In Week Three, however, he had one of his worst weeks (38%, 131 yards, zero TDs or INTs). He then had a great two weeks in Weeks Seven and Eight (66%, 618 total yards, seven TDs, two INTs) before bottoming out again the last three weeks (47%, 487 yards, three TDs, four INTs). This pick is mainly for the match-up – the Saints are ranked 11th against the pass (197 ypg) and have given up 225 ypg the last three weeks. On the season, they are tied for last with the most TD passes allowed (20). Add to that the Saints are 24th against the run and Vick has a good shot at getting his season back on track.

Matt Hasselbeck, SEA – Hasselbeck has picked a good team to return to the field against – the Seahawks face the 31st-ranked Packer defense (241 ypg) that gave up four TDs to Tom Brady last week. Six out of the 10 QBs they have faced have had multi-TD games. Another plus is that the Packers have only managed eight INTs this season. It all comes down to timing – he will have some rough patches, but he will definitely be worth getting back into the line-up.

Charlie Frye, CLE – Frye has been solid, but not spectacular of late (63%, 625 yards, two TDs and one INT the last three weeks). However, Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow have never been this healthy at the same time. This week, Frye faces the 32nd-ranked Bengals defense (255 ypg) that has given up nearly 850 yards passing and five TDs the last two weeks. Frye is in a good position to have a very good game this week.

Negative Play:

Tom Brady, NE – Brady is coming off a four-TD game, but even factoring that in, he hasn’t done exceptionally well (63%, 700 yards, five TDs and five INTs the last three weeks). This week, it will be a rough go as the Patriots face the top-ranked Bears defense (152 ypg) that has allowed the fewest TDs passing (seven).

Philip Rivers, SD – Expect the Chargers to turn LaDainian Tomlinson loose on the Raiders this week, just like they have everyone else in recent weeks. The Chargers gained 194 yards on the ground with two TDs in Week One against Oakland, and they should surpass that. The Raiders are second in the league against the pass (157 ypg) with a modest 12 TDs allowed. Rivers should do fine this week, but just not at the clip he has been having (69%, 770 yards, five TDs and two INTs the last three weeks).

Rex Grossman, CHI – Grossman has made Vick look like Mr. Consistency lately. He’s been all over the board. He faces the 15th-ranked Patriots pass defense (207 ypg) that has toughened up of late (180 ypg allowed the last three weeks).

Running Backs

Plus Play:

Frank Gore, SF – Gore is hoping for a repeat of his Week Two performance (127 yards and one TD) against the Rams. Chances are he will as the Niners are facing the 31st-ranked run defense (153 ypg) has given up 10 TDs on the ground this year and gave up 242 yards rushing last week to Carolina.

Travis Henry, TEN – Henry has done very well since becoming the starter in Tennessee – 317 yards and two TDs the last three weeks. The Giants front line has been decimated of late. While they are ranked 13th against the run (104 ypg), they gave up 165 yards and two TDs to Jacksonville last week.

Joseph Addai, IND – Addai has emerged as the primary ball carrier of late as he has 52 touches for 223 yards and two TDs the last three weeks, compared to Dominic Rhodes’ totals of 33 touches for 155 yards and no TDs. This week, the Colts face the 26th-ranked Eagles run defense (130 ypg) that has given up 355 yards in the last two games.

Negative Play:

Thomas Jones, CHI – Jones has done very well of late (338 total yards and a TD the last three weeks), but he faces the second-ranked run defense of New England (76 ypg) that has allowed just five TDs this season.

Edgerrin James, ARI – James finally gained 100 total yards last week and upped his yards per carry to 4.4. However, the Cardinals face the top-ranked run defense of Minnesota (60 ypg) that has allowed just four TDs this season. Over the last three weeks, the Vikings allowed just 45 ypg and no TDs during that span.

Reggie Bush, NO – Bush just hasn’t been getting it done of late (53 touches, 215 yards and one TD the last three weeks). This week, he goes up against the ninth-ranked Atlanta defense (99 ypg). Deuce McAllister is still the man here.

Wide Receivers

Plus Play:

Darrell Jackson and Deion Branch, SEA – Both Jackson and Branch should be jumping for joy that both Hasselback will return and that the Seahawks face the lowly Packer pass defense.

Donald Driver, GB – As long as Brett Favre is 100% following his ulnar nerve injury from last week, Driver should have a good game. Reports are that Favre should be fine. The Packers will face the 19th-ranked Seahawks defense (213 ypg) that has only make six INTs all season.

Joe Horn and Devery Henderson, NO – Drew Brees is one of the hottest QBs out there right now. The bad news is that both Marques Colston and Terrance Copper are questionable with high ankle sprains. The good news is that Horn and Henderson stepped in last week without missing a step. During the last three weeks, Horn has 14 catches for 329 yards and four TDs, while Henderson has 12 receptions for 280 yards and two TDs the last four weeks. The Saints face the 29th-ranked pass defense of Atlanta (232 ypg) and are easy to move the ball on.

Negative Play:

Andre Johnson, HOU – Johnson was held without a TD last week against an average Buffalo defense. This week, he faces the 16th-ranked Jets defense (207 ypg) that has been playing well of late, having allowed 173 ypg the last three weeks. Johnson should get his yards again this week, but don’t expect a big game.

Hines Ward, PIT – Ward is questionable this week, following another week in which Ben Roethlisberger threw more INTs than TDs. This week, the Steelers face the eighth-ranked Ravens pass defense (192 ypg) that has allowed just 10 passing TDs this season.

Donte Stallworth and Reggie Brown, PHI – The value of Stallworth and Brown took a huge hit following the Eagles having lost Donovan McNabb for the season. This week, the Eagles face the third-ranked Colts pass defense (165 ypg) that has allowed a reasonable 10 passing TDs this season. Expect the Eagles to run against the 32nd-ranked Colts run defense this week.

ok ill completely agree that the bucs are BAD this year @ 3-7 and they play a hot dallas team... but are you predicting a 45-0 shutout steamroll? The highest bucs at their positions:

QB=32nd
RB=54th
WR=20th
K=32nd
DEF=32nd
and no TE at all

bit harsh dont ya think?

Williams was an error -- he's been correctly placed at 27. Don't know how that happened, but thank you for the alert.

Otherwise -- No, it means that owners shouldn't play their other TB players/DEF unless they absolutely have to.

And Anthony Becht was 27th, just out of the top 25. Alex Smith is doubtful with a high ankle sprain.

c'mon dude, you've got oakland defense way to high, they should be dead last this week!

I think a little credit is certainly due here, the tampa defense was absolutley horrendous today and they did nothing to come even close to stopping tony romo

jeff--- nice work as always!!!

great calls with tony romo #5 and the tampa def as #32

I just hope you are right about ranking charlie frye #11 and rudi johnson as #7, I need monster games from the two of them to combat my opponent's combination of TONY ROMO/LJ

tough one I know, but what can you do

*** hope all is going well with your dad and I am very impressed that you found the time to do your rankings amongnst everything else that was going on--- your article is defintely appreciated here and I for one will never question your rankings--- thanks again and good luck with you father

I would not support Jeff's rankings if I did not agree with his logic. He is pretty damn good at this, and I can't usually find anything wrong with his suggestions. When I am stuck, I go Jeff.

good call moving terry glenn up after last week, he proved hes starting lineup worthy again.

Jeff you are REALLY making me reconsider my QB situation. Vick at 3 and Rivers at 16...are you sure about this, because Vick has been recently benched for poor play and in favor of Phillip (red hot) rivers. I assume you are predicting a shootout in ATL...also, do you know if Colston or Foster are starting/playing?

I can't speak for jeff, but considering that LT is a touchdown hog that is probably why he would have rivers ranked lower this week

you are right in thinking a shootout will happen with the falcons, and that is probably what jeff had in mind as well

remember these are general rankings based on FANTASY performances--- vick is more in line for a big game--- oak has a pretty solid pass defense and can't stop the run--- all signs are pointing to another monster game for tomllinson

if jeff is wrong about this he certainly won't be in the minority---- LT should put of ridiculous numbers and get all the tds once again, if he doesn't you can chalk it up to the wackiness of the nfl along with fantasy football

Thanks. We had a nice Thanksgiving -- the first I've spent with my parents in several years. My dad's like me (real quiet) and he made an effort to chat us up a bit, which was nice.

And thanks to those that have had good things to say about the rankings. I realize that they're far from perfect. I always shoot for 100%, but that ain't ever going to happen. Someone commented that I'm barely right more than I'm wrong. Just like in gambling -- as long as you're at least doing that, you're coming out ahead. I just do my best to be as far above that mark as possible.

I covered Vick and Rivers in the update coincidently. I admit -- since I'm not much of a fan of Vick, I hate putting him up there, so it's a big reach for me. I just feel strongly about his match-up with the Saints, so it's just a hunch that he will do better than he recently has (I realize I'm setting myself up for failure ). And I think Rivers will be okay -- 200 yards and a TD for sure. I just think his ceiling's limited.

Colston didn't practice today, but he still might play this weekend. Game-time decision. It will help my team immensely if he does (but kills my pick of Henderson ). And the same for Foster, but I've also seen him thought of as unlikely. So if Colston is 50/50, it sounds like Foster is 30/70 against playing. As of today.

oh man do I hope you are right about CHARLIE FRYE and the plus play

if he could somehow negate TONY ROMO at least a little bit,

250--- 3tds would be sweet, but something more along the yardage and possibly even another td or 2 would obviously be extra special

I know these are not reasonable expectations, but getting 5 tds from romo was a little ridiculous as well and with fantasy football and the nfl you never really know

I won't hold my breath though, but I will be rooting for jeff to be dead on with his charlie frye prediction this week

I really need another wild and crazy shootout game with the bengals like they have had the last 2 weeks...

GO CHARLIE FRYE!!!!!!!!!!

Rivers should easily get at least 200 yards and 1-2 TDs a game even if LT is on a roll. IMO, Rivers is gonna be a top 5 QB in a couple years because with LT and the Chargers rushing game, Rivers should be really good.

I know, I'm stoked I have him in my keeper. I never thought when I drafted him this season he would come on so strong so soon.

Remember LT's not just helping Rivers by drawing safties into the box and drawing attention to the run....he's the chargers leading reciever too.

I just do my best to be as far above that mark as possible.

that comment last week was not a personal attack on you, could have been worded better, what I meant was that everybody is wrong more than %50 of the time, guys on every website and every newspaper and magazine.

charlie frye just threw his 2nd pick--- what a terrible performance against a really bad cincy pass defense

I am in dire straits from my qb position--- luckily I have clinced a 1st round bye in the playoffs and have 2 weeks to figure out which bumb from the waiver wire to ride with in the playoffs

DAMN THAT TONY ROMO AND HIS 5 TDS--- if only my opponent would have stuck with his usual qb, marc bulger, than I may have had a chance with LT still to come

oh well...........

hah, im surprised he went with romo when bulger's playing SF (even though bulger's sucking right now). bulger's a tejada version of a QB, he goes absolutely nuts for a few weeks then dies for the next few, and then the cycle starts again....maybe one of these years he'll just stay hot like tejada's 150 rbi season

c'mon dude, you've got oakland defense way to high, they should be dead last this week!

Example A as to why it is easier to criticise rather than create.

Funny how a Yankee fan would critisize. That's like an oxymoron...
