We're pleased to announce the implementation of a new chat room!
The chat room is IRC-based with an easy to use web browser interface. It is not linked up to the message board database. As such, (if you choose) you can register a chat username with password. See the end of this message for registration details.
The chat can currently be accessed via three different options:
1) Message Board: Via "Join" button on top of frontpage (will pop-up chat window)
2) Main FIC Chat Page:
This version has a few more chat options (e.g, easy use of smilies, sounds, etc.)
Note: The previous two chat consoles are Java-based and require you accept the Java certificate when prompted.
3) Alternative Chat page: For those who don't/can't have Java in use, I've put together a non-Java based chat interface. There's a link from the main chat page or click here.
Chat Features:
Registration of Username (see end of message for details)
Private Messaging: Click on any user's name to launch a new PM window.
Full customizeability: ability to alter colors, format, etc. as needed
Full use of smilies & audio (see below for codes)
Streamlined and stable: chat will hold numerous, concurrent chatters without decreasing performance
Listing of current users in chat on any page
Etc, etc...
Chat Tips
It's a good idea to have your sound on as a chat *beep* will notify you of new chatters.
If you'd like to chat and it's vacant, jump in and others will likely join you .
To paste copied text into chat box, press CTRL+V
When pasting URL's, make sure they begin with "http://" to allow them to be linked
As I receive feedback, I'll likely make a few changes and updates to the system. Feel free to post your comments and suggestions.
I look forward to seeing you all in chat!

How to register a chat username
#####################
1) Log in with your desired username (highly recommended to use your message board nickname)
2) In the text box, type:
/nick YourChosenName
Where 'YourChosenName' is the name you wish to use.
3) In the text box, type:
/msg nickserv REGISTER password e-mail
Don't include characters around your password and e-mail address, just seperate them with a single space. The e-mail address that you use must be valid as an authorization code will be sent to you in order to complete the registration of your chosen nickname
If you use a fake e-mail address then you will not be able to register the nickname and will have to wait 24 hours before you can try again.
4) Once you have received the e-mail containing your authorization code it is time for you to complete the registration of YourChosenName
First ensure that you are using the nickname that you wish to register
/nick YourChosenName
Then complete the registration by using the command contained within your e-mail
You have now completed the registration of your new nickname, the next option you may want to look at is how to hide your e-mail address from other users.
/msg NickServ SET HIDE EMAIL ON
There are other options for information that you can hide, to see them issue the following command
/msg NickServ HELP SET HIDE
5) IMPORTANT: Every time you log back onto chat with YourChosenName, type:
/msg nickserv identify yourpassword
If you do not do this step upon entering, the system will not recognize you as the valid user and may un-register the account in time (since it'll assume username is not duly registered).
