I meant in trouble from the police. Can someone explain to me how the police can go ahead and proceed with the charges if the girlfriend does not want them to proceed?
I understand that the police can still charge him with something like distrubing the peace or something like that. But, as for the assault charge, how can they proceed with that?

Yeah I dont know that they can without the girls approval. It really depends on the specific state. Some states have legislation that pushes the charges even if the victim does not come forward if the accuser has previous charges.
The reason I know this: I was in the Army and we had don't hit your wife(spouses) classes. Laws vary state to state.
