Football Player News: Jimmy Smith (WR), JAX
News: Jimmy Smith, formally of Jacksonville, informed the Jaguars yesterday, and announced in a press conference today, that he will abruptly retire from the NFL after 12 seasons.
View: This is a shocking announcement to the Jaquars as well to all of Fantasy Football. He had contemplated retiring after the 2005 season, but Jack Del Rio asked him to take some time to make sure if that is what he wants to do.
The annoucement leaves a hole in many fantasy keeper leagues. It also knocks Byron Leftwich down a few spots and it bumps up Ernest Wilford, Matt Jones and Reggie Williams some. It also adds some luster to the Jaguars' first-round pick, TE Marcedes Lewis (my second round pick of the FIC Keeper Salary League rookie draft, thank you).
Jimmy Smith was one of my favorite players and I will definitely will miss his gutsy play over the middle and stellar grabs in the end zone. Best Wishes, Jimmy. |

I enjoyed the days of Brunell to McCardell and Jimmy Smith. They were a great wide receiver tandem. I'm not really sure on the general "requirements" for the NFL HOF but any thoughts on his chances? He's top 10 all time in receptions, probably top 15 in reception yards and I'm not sure where he ranks in receiving TD's but probably top 15-20ish. He had a great career either way. |

It is nearing cut time I guess.
Anyhow, he was great and it is great to see a guy like him leave now. Better to burn out than to fade away. He had a great year last year and this year he is still better than 90% of the WR out there, but yet he knows its time. I respect that.
I say this hurts the Jags big time. They already dont have a remote semblance of a running game and now their primary option is gone. It's a shame too with that defense. |

I think it will be tough for him to get in. If Art Monk and Michael Irvin aren't in yet (and they have rings), I don't see Smith getting in. |

Yeah that was the worst part of Jerry Rice's career. He has set the precedent so high for WR to get into the hall.
But here is the fact he has on his side:
He has more receptions than every receiver in the Hall of Fame.
Well minus Jerry Rice who will get in the year before he does. |

Is this post from 2006?
Here are the WRs the Jaguars have in camp:
Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, Ernest Wilford, Cortez Hankton, Randy Hymes, Troy Edwards, Felton Huggins, Kyle Brown
Here's the roster from NFL.com: (CLICK)
Here's a Google page of recent stories that refer to the retirement of Jimmy Smith: (CLICK)
And here are all the WRs named "Smith" that are on the NFL depth charts:
Brad Smith
D.J. Smith
Daniel Smith
Jonathan Smith
Rod Smith
Steve Smith
Zuriel Smith
I would say that you are in dire need of a new fantasy site.
Welcome. |
