Baseball Player News: Carl Crawford (OF), TB
By: James Meyerriecks
News: Rumors are spreading about Crawford potentially being traded to either the Angels or Rockies. Since Rocco Baldelli's return, the Rays have a massive surplus of quality outfielders on their forty-man roster with Crawford, Baldelli, Jonny Gomes, Damon Hollins, Joey Gathright, and Russell Branyan. Throw in uber-prospect Delmon Young, who most feel will be ready to start next season, and they can certainly afford to move their young star.
Views: The primary name being thrown around is Ervin Santana, though the Rays certainly wouldn't make that move straight up. The Halos have a ton of depth in their minor league system, and the Rays are all about going after young players that are close to the majors. With Colorado, just about any deal that could get done would have to include stud prospect Jeff Baker, who would likely open up another trade rumor involving Aubrey Huff in the near future. The Rays would have to get some pitching out of the Rockies to get a deal done, too, however, and the Rockies don't seem willing to move any of their top three pitching prospects. |

I wouldn't mind seeing Crawford in a Rockies uniform if they do not have to give too much up to get him. Only question is, they have Holliday in LF already so how would the OF be shuffled (Hawpe is no slouch either in RF). |

Crawford would probably have to learn CF in COL. His power numbers would be tremendously helped in COL. |

I like Crawford on Tampa. Meh, but really Tampa needs pitching REALLY bad- mainly someone to closer their games but also another ace. |

I guess you haven't gotten the memo yet....every since they started humidoring the balls, Colorado's power numbers are no better than any other park's. |

I guess you didn't get the memo that humidoring balls doesn't change the ball parks dimensions. Coors has a higher runs, home runs, hits and doubles rate than Tropicana...and Coors is a NL park. |

I guess trading Santana makes sense considering the Weaver mess. |

Check your numbers.
Anyhow, I am interested in seeing what happens now that it is getting warmer. |

Tropicana:
Dimensions: Left field: 315 ft.; left-center: 370 ft.; center field: 404 ft.; right-center: 370 ft.; right field: 322 ft.; backstop: 50 ft.; roof: 225 ft.; foul territory: small.
Fences: 9½ feet.
Coors Field:
Dimensions: Left field: 347 ft.; left-center: 390 ft.; center field: 415 ft.; right-center: 375 ft.; right field: 350 ft.; backstop: 56 ft..
Fences: 17 ft. in right field; 8 ft. elsewhere.
Both taken from www.ballparks.com
The dimensions in Coors will be better for Crawfords ropes that get caught in the smaller outfield in Tampa.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor
Runs HR H 2B
Coors Field 1.101 1.184 1.093 0.992
Tropicana Field 1.014 1.117 0.887 0.819 |

I highly doubt Carl Crawford will be traded. Yes the Devil Rays need pitching but I do not think they will move Carl Crawford to do so. Stu Sternberg the new owner of the Rays made it clear when he took over that he would try and build this franchise around guys like Crawford, Baldelli, and Cantu. The Rays would really love to move Aubrey Huff, but Aubrey has diminished all trade value whatsoever this season by puting up a .193 average.
Crawford will remain a Ray. |

someone in that of needs to go...
baldelli is someone the rays are hanging on to
delmon young isnt going anywhere...
the third of spot will either be gomes, crawford, upton or gathright
yup I said upton, his d is terrible and would likely follow sorianos suit of being moved to of...
the rays have an abbundence of outfielders and will need to move one or two. they would love to move huff but at this point his value is very low.
gathright could be moved but they could get more for crawford. |

I agree. The problem is that Gathright and Huff have little to no value. If Gathright had done well in his showcase earlier he could fetch a nice price, but a .201 (?) clip isn't fetching any studs. Gomes/Upton can fetch a nice set of prospects and of course Crawford would net the best package. The DRays must hope lots of teams stay in contention to drive up the price. |

If I'm the Rays I shop Gathright and Huff at the deadline and see what I can get for them. Gomes can be made a permanent DH while Young plays RF. Hollins is a nice player...but not of the quality of any of the others. He makes for a nice back up outfielder. Huff should have some value left and Gathright is so fast that somebody is bound to want him. |
