Baseball Player News: Ben Broussard (1b), SEA
By: James Meyerriecks

News: Broussard was traded to the Seattle Mariners for outfield prospect Shin-Soo Choo and a player to be named, the AP reports. Broussard, who was batting .322 with 13 homers in 264 ABs for the Tribe, figures to step in at first base and allow Richie Sexson to move to the DH slot.

Views: Broussard loses out a little with his home park, and won't have nearly the lineup support around him that he had in Cleveland. That said, he no longer has to worry about scrapping for any playing time. Oddly enough, the Tribe traded their other first baseman, Eduardo Perez, to the Mariners earlier in the year. Victor Martinez will pick up some of the slack at first for the Tribe, while Travis Hafner could see a little more time in the field.

Hopefully Hafner gets enough starts at 1B to be eligible there next year in fantasy.

That would be very nice.

Yeah. I'm more concerned with next year though.

How do players get certain eligibilty next year? Ie. Glaus was a 3B but got added SS this year. Also people (on here and elsewhere) have kept saying how Miguel Cabrera might lose OF next year when he started his season as 3B and OF. How does that work?

Yahoo fantasy sports staff decides based on previous years and projections. There is no concrete formula.

Well from what I understand if Cabrera has started at least 5 games or played 10 games in the OF this year he keeps his elgibility at that position next year. If he doesn't it is gone. That is what was explained to me in the past. Does Big Bad Ben have more value with the move to Seattle? Does he start?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=5544&context=fielding

according ot that Mcab hasn't played any OF. So I think it's safe to say he loses it.

That's not true. I have an email from Yahoo sports that I'll dig up and post later.

Ben might DH? Isn't Sexson playing at 1B?

Broussard would likely DH. Sexson has played great D this season and Ben has been subject at times. With Everett in the minors I'd expect Ben to step into the DH spot with a few 1B starts. Also, hopefully this pans out for the M's as Shin-Soo Choo was really tearing up AAA this season...

Choo hits the decisive homerun (first of his career) in a 1-0 win against his old organization. Sign of things to come...
