Baseball Player News: Scott Kazmir (SP), TB
By: James Meyerriecks

News: Kazmir was placed on the disabled list Sunday with a sore left shoulder.

Views: At least the Rays aren't teasing us anymore by saying that he's just going to miss a start. This will be better for Kazmir in the long-run, though his fantasy owners will certainly be stung temporarily. Hopefully a couple of weeks off will help him put this behind him. This was a smart, cautious baseball move made with the future in mind.

Bradenton Hearld

Kazmir could miss the rest of the season

ST. PETERSBURG - Don't be surprised if we've seen the last of Scott Kazmir for a while, if not for the rest of the season.

Something wasn't right when he missed his first start after the All-Star break because his neck stiffened in the middle of a game in which he wasn't pitching. Then came the sore pitching shoulder suffered in his last start, which forced him to miss Friday's start and the one scheduled for Tuesday, as well.

Now, the All-Star lefty was placed on the disabled list.

The Devil Rays have recalled J.P. Howell, the pitcher acquired from the Kansas City Royals in a trade for Joey Gathwright. He will start Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers.

Though Kazmir is due to come off Aug. 8, which would coincide with his next scheduled start, it's likely the Rays will shut Kazmir down until he's fully healed, and that could mean the rest of the season.

. . .

He's scheduled to pitch the 9th right now but if this is more serious than first though it would be a smart move to shut Kaz down for the year. He's shown that he is going to be one of the league's elite in years to come, so don't ruin the kid's arm at this point in his career. I'd love to see Kaz keep pitching this year, but if it were to put his future in jeopardy, shut him down and watch him dominate next year.

I can only hope this is the first of many DL trips, as us mets fans got the joy of living with victor zambrano.

I know the dl recently signed prior, but zambrano would be a cheap addition to thier rotation.

mets is like a laughing stock in my school because their a disgrace to new york, I love all ny sports except mets, because we have a better ny baseball team, which is the yankees, even if the mets win the world series for 10 years straight still they would not match up to the yankees.

Quit your crying Mets fans. It's not out fault your front office agreed to one of the worst trades in MLB history in your case, or in the Rays case, the one of the best.
