Baseball Player News: Jason Isringhausen (RP), STL
By: James Meyerriecks

News: Izzy's old friend the walk was back on Wednesday night, but Rich Aurilia didn't stay on first for long after accepting the free pass. Isringhausen walked his first batter in his past six appearances and (not surprisingly) blew his first save since July 9 as David Ross blasted a two run walkoff shot in Wednesday's 8-7 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Views: Though he's been much better over the past month and a half, Izzy's obsession with walking batters is the worst thing you can possibly see out of your closer. I'd much rather have my closer giving up a solo blast than a walk, because that at least means he's going after hitters and trying to overpower them. Isringhausen has had a horrible history with his walk rate over the past few years, and part of it (as shown earlier this year) has seemed to be due to the fact that he's afraid to challenge hitters when he's behind in the count. Hopefully he doesn't let this outing get to him and gets back on track, but we're keeping an eye on him.

Just a question, not a dig by any means:
Do Cards fans just get sick of this guy? He's constantly talked up and seems to always put up decent save numbers (silly stat) but consistently has a higher ERA and BS rate than you'd like out of a guy with his hype/contract.

Who's up in the Cardinals closer role when Izzy leaves or whatever happens to him?

Isringhausen consistently puts up 35-40 saves, so more than just decent. He'll convert his save chances in Bob Wickman-esque fashion.

As for future closer, Adam Wainwright has looked good in relief, and there's always Braden Looper.

Wrong. Here are his save totals: 0, 0, 0, 9, 33, 34, 32, 22, 47, 39. He's got about 1 BS for every 5.5 saves he converts.

The STL fans here say Wainwright is starting next year.

For the past five seasons, I was pretty close without even looking at his stats. 33, 34, 32 are pretty close to 35.

Pretty close yes, but it doesn't constitute "consistently" 35-40 saves. If he didn't blow so many it would be.

In a word, yes. I really don't get why they extended his contract last year. He's making a ton of money, and isn't all that good for what he's paid. I'd rather have seen the team look to develop Mark McCormick or Chris Lambert for the closer's role.

Izzy's not going anywhere though...he's not good enough that other teams covet him (especially with that price tag), but he's good enough that you can run him out there.

With four free agent starters on the current team (Mulder, Marquis, Suppan, Weaver), the expectation is that the Cardinals sign one of them (most likely Suppan), move Wainwright into a rotation spot, and (obviously) stick with Anthony Reyes for a spot. By doing this (and keeping Carp), they'd really only need to look for one arm on the open market.

So, I'm guessing Izzy is still gonna close? If he fails, who's second in line? Looper since Wainwright is starting.

I want Mulder to sign with Boston. That would be awesome, provided he can return healthy. 2 lefties. That's sick stuff.

Because we all know having two left handers in your rotation is the key to success...
