Baseball Player News: Albert Pujols (1B), STL
By: Jeff Brown

News: There have been a couple of questions on the board about whether this is the worst start of his career of Albert Pujols.

Views: That can be an emphatic "yes". Pujols has started this season with a .174 BA (6-for-34). During his rookie season of 2001, Pujols had seven nine-game stretches where he batted .172 or less. And in 2003 from 7/1/03 to 7/9/03, he had a nine-game stretch where he hit .171 (6-for-35).

Since none of those occurred since the start of the season, this is obviously the worst start Pujols has had in his first nine games of a season.

This is flip flop of last season -- going into the season the big question was A-Rod vs. Pujols at #1. A lot of people went with Pujols and it really paid off. This season Pujols was the consensus #1, and so far A-Rod has far outproduced him. I mean, it's Pujols, there's no way he doesn't pick it up sooner than later. But I've never seen him have a down streak like this so early.

The key is, he's not striking out. He's putting the ball into play, just hitting it to players/not making good contact/getting unlucky so far.

Yeah. Making contact is always a good first step towards hitting dingers and getting the stats that he can get. Ever since he's been called up, he's hit triple digits in runs scored and RBIs, and I expect him to repeat that again this season. However, his 2Bs have declined since 2004 with only 38 in '05 and 33 in '06.

The 2Bs probably went down because where he hit the ball allowed him to round all the bases... JK.... hes an awkward looking runner, hes runs so stiff.. thats probably why hes not reaching second on balls that stay in the park.
