Baseball Player News: Chris Carpenter (SP), STL
By: Jeff Brown

News: Chris Carpenter sustained a major setback this weekend when it was announced that the righthander will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow and is expected to miss at least three months.

Views: As if the Cardinals needed additional bad news when they are losing, 13-0, to the Astros.

After two weeks of rest, Carpenter threw a bullpen session on April 28 and had no swelling or stiffness. On May 1, Carpenter threw three simulated innings and again had no swelling or stiffness on that day or the next day.

But after the swelling and stiffness returned a couple of days later, it was determined that the only course of action left is surgery. Brad Thompson is expected to permanently move into the rotation.

Carpenter, a 15-game winner last year and the NL Cy Young award winner in 2005, will be out at least three months, the team said Saturday. An exam on Friday with Dr. George Paletta, the team's medical supervisor, revealed recurrent swelling, stiffness and loss of motion.

Carpenter threw about 60 pitches to teammates in a simulated game on Tuesday in Milwaukee, and said he felt fine afterward. He went on the 15-day disabled list on April 10 with swelling in the elbow that developed a few hours after he allowed five runs in six innings in a season-opening loss to the New York Mets on April 1.

The surgery was announced during the game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. The Cardinals had been hoping Carpenter would return to the rotation on Tuesday.

I have to imagine the Cardinals will call up Chris Narveson or Blake Hawksworth soon since they need another starter. If the team falls really far out of contention, look for it to be Hawk, who is one of the team's best prospects.
