Baseball Player News: Ryan Braun (3b), MIL
By: James Meyerriecks

News: The Brewers have reportedly called Braun up from AAA Nashville. He is expected to be in the starting lineup for the Brewers to make his big league debut Friday.

Views: It was a foregone conclusion that this was going to happen some time soon, and with the Brewers struggling lately (3-7 in their last ten), now seems to be as good a time as any. Tony Graffanino has been receiving the bulk of the work at third base lately, and is batting just .176 on the year.

Braun is an elite third base prospect who should add a nice corner bat to the player pool immediately. He's definitely someone to target in keeper leagues. The 23-year-old was absolutely tearing up AAA in his first look at the level, batting .354/.426/.726 (that's an insane 1.152 OPS for those of you without a calculator handy) with ten homers, four steals, and a 14:10 BB:K ratio in 113 at bats. He has outstanding power, good average-hitting ability, and good speed. If there's a knock, it's his glove.

This is actually making me re-think what to do with my #4 waiver priority in my keeper (#1 and #2 have already skipped out on Hughes, Pence, etc.... aka, all the big callups so far, so there's a good chance they will here, too). I was going to use it on Gallardo, but with Braun coming up so close, I may re-think it. The unfortunate problem I have is that I'm commited to Alex Gordon (my top non-keeper selection) already at third, so I'll probably go for Gallardo.

I'm in exactly same situation Jim. I've got Gordon but if I use my waiver on Gallardo then I wont get Braun.

Gordon's swinging the bat well enough lately so that I feel comfortable with him at third. With Lackey and Peavy atop my rotation (and both very solid keeper options), I look at Gallardo as a bit of a luxury, but one I'll be after. Of course, if someone were to swoop in and nab Gallardo of those top three (most likely the guy with the third waiver priority), then I'd take Braun just to have some trade flexibility.

yea this kinda changes things...

I was gonna snag frank thomas with my #4 waiver (20 teams so a #4 is a big deal) but his obvious injury history and current slump are turning me off. so then I was thinking about hitting up gallardo.... and now braun works his way into the equation. exactly how good is this kid?

Depends. I think he's going to get sent down once Alou comes off the DL but I may be wrong.

Hopefully Julio Franco is released, but I would say Gomez will likely go back down.

Just found out Mike Gonzalez is out for a year so I'll be dropping him.

I'm hoping Braun has a sh!tty first couple of days so he doesn't draw any attention to himself....that way I can nab him.

I saw a projection that slated Braun for a .260 season w/ 12 SBs. What's everyone here thinking?
