I already posted this in the NFL Week 8 forum, but this will make for some better discussion between me, Evil Empire, and, well, anyone else interested.

JETS IDEAL OFFSEASON
SIGNINGS/RESIGNINGS:
LG Justin Smiley, SF---Jets have a major hole here
NT Ethan Kelley, Cleveland---backup to perhaps the greatest NT ever, and 330+ pounds in the middle
CB Randall Gay, NE---we all know about Mangini's hard-on for Patriots, but a solid CB next to Revis for a few years
TE Ben Troupe, Tennessee---I've always liked his potential, and he'd be cheap
G/T Adrian Jones--solid backup on the OL
C/G Wade Smith--see above
CB Hank Poteat--good depth guy at CB, if undersized
WR Wallace Wright--one of the best ST guys in the NFL
S Rashad Washington--see above

P Benjamin Dato, Fordham--I doubt he'll be drafted because he plays in a lower division, but is probably the 2nd or 3rd best senior punter, averaged 47 a punt and netted 42 this year. Pure beast

RELEASES/CONTRACTS NOT RENEWED:
WR Justin McCareins--can't catch. Get out
S Erik Coleman--Great his first year, massive decline since
FB Darian Barnes--hasn't played more than 4 games this year. gone
CB David Barrett--He is just plain awful
LB Brad Kassell--Doesn't do anything wrong. Or right
FB Stacy Tutt--I think we already cut him
QB Marques Tuiasosopo--I can't pronounce your name. Bye!

TRADES
Vilma to Detroit along with 2nd round pick (#35) for their 1st round pick (#14) and their 5th round pick (#174)
Trade our first round pick (#4) and our 4th round pick (#127) to Houston for their first round pick (#13) and their second round pick (#45) this year and their first round pick (#12) in 2009
Trade Chad to Minnesota for their 3rd round pick (#75)

DRAFT
1st round, pick #13 Vernon Gholston, OLB/DE, Ohio State--the dominant pass rusher this team so desperately needs off the edge, great mix of speed and power
1st round pick #14 Gosder Cherilus, RT, Boston College--the long term answer at RT, opposite DBrickashaw, maybe a reach, but I don't think so
Second round pick #45--Adarius Bowman, WR, Oklahoma State--at 6'4 a great red zone target and the future opposite cotchery
Third round pick #70--Tom Zbikowski, S/PR Notre Dame--Jets could use a safety who can cover downfield, and an electric PR too
Pick #75 Joe Flacco, QB, Delaware, big arm, very smart QB and insurance policy for Kellen Clemens
Pick #163 Owen Schmitt, FB, West Virginia--absolute beast of a blocker and short-yardage runner.
Pick #174 Kendall Langford, DE, Hampton--290 pound DE from a lower conference but great size for the position and very strong, will be workout warrior
Pick # 195 Justin Shirley, NT Fresno State--Great size for a 3-4 NT though he has some mental problems. If not him, go to Red Bryant from Texas A&M
Pick # 228 Red Keith, ILB, Central Michigan--great run stuffer if undersized in the middle, would go well with the beast that David Harris is.

2007-08 DEPTH CHART
QB: Clemens, Flacco, Older Vet
RB: TJones, Leon
FB: Schmidt
WR: Coles, Cotchery, Bowman, Smith, Stuckey, Wright
TE: Baker, Troupe
LT: Ferguson, Clement
LG: Smiley, Smith/Jones
C: Mangold, Smith
RG: Moore, Jones
RT: Cherilus, Bender
DE: Robertson, Ellis, Coleman, Langford
NT: Kelly, Shirley
OLB: Thomas, Gholston, Hobson
ILB: Harris, Barton, Keith, Chatham
CB: Revis, Gay, Dyson, Poteat, Miller
S: Rhodes, Zbikowski, ESmith, RWashington
KR: Miller, Washington
PR: Zbikowski
K: Nugent
P: Free Agent

There is your 2008 AFC East champions

Oh, I should probably mention Tom Brady also tears his ACL

devon, did you find all this information, or did you just make it up? Pretty impressive. Why don't you want Vilma?

I made up the vast majority of it. It took me a while to go through all the NFL contracts to find FAs after this year, but I remembered a few like Gay and Troupe after hearing it offhand.

I did a lot of my draft research at nfldraftcountdown, and some of the discussion should be credited to guys at other Jets sites.

I don't love Vilma because he's not really big enough for the 3-4. Part of that is Robertson's fault, though. He can't really take up 2 blockers as much as he should, so Vilma's being blocked by a lot of guards. Still, as a 3-4 ILB you need to shake the G. Today, rookie David Harris had 17 tackles, multiple TFL. He looks like the future at ILB, and I'm very high on Red Keith, and also like Hobson as a stopgap there.

I know Mangini will probably do absolutely none of this, but those are a bunch of guys that I am very high on, and that fill Jets needs. I would especially note the need for a big NT, 3-4 ILB and DE, big, redzone thread WR, catching FB, and long-term answers at LG and RT. This scenario is extremely plausible within salary cap limitations and draft projections.

FIC 2006 Fantasy Baseball Draft Kit

Very nice Devon, seems like you put a lot of work into this. I'll comment more in a bit, but just one thing that jumped out...not sure that Adarius Bowman will still be around that late. He's probably the 3rd best wideout that should enter the draft...behind DeSean Jackson, and a notch ahead of Malcolm Kelly. Limas Sweed could go ahead of Adarius assuming all is well after he recovers from his recent surgery. Oh yeah, also Doucet should be a first-round lock.

The rest seems very logical. The first round will be ripe with defensive ends and offensive tackles. They'll miss out on Long but you've still got Baker, Clady, Cherilus and others. Also not short on ends with Calais Campbell, Chris Long, Derrick Harvey, Quentin Groves, Tyson Jackson, and Lawrence Jackson. I'm still not sold on them picking an end so early in the draft, but there certainly will be quality guys available.

I wonder if Marinelli would take Vilma and a 2nd rounder for our 1st. Well, I wouldnt worry about it now... We'll more than likely lose some games the rest of the season, our schedule gets pretty tough.

Like I said, that mock is full of guys I absolutely love. Kendall Langford from Hampton is 6'5, 290 and would be a great 3-4 end, IMO. The 3-4 is gaining more popularity so there are more players coming into the league ready to fit in at NT or DE than there have been ever before.

Bowman could be a first round pick, but if I remember right his measurables aren't great so his stock could fall at the combine.

And Groves as a OLB is the one thing the Jets need more than anything. The other thing they could do that I'd like is take Baker at 8 and Vernon Gholston later that round. A pass rusher off the end should be the Jets #2 priority after a NT.

You guys better whoop some Patriot ass tomorrow. Nothing would be funnier than beating the Pats when they are vowing revenge.

I don't think Gay would be the best #2. He had a good year last year, but I dont think he's been as good this year. Maybe Revis, a #2 and Gay. Maybe im just talking out of my ass, I have no stats to back it up, but from watching him it doesn't seem like he's playing as good as he did at the end of last season.

I'd love it, and I believe since the 49ers won we wouldn't have to worry about them (meaning the Patriots with the Niners pick) leaping over us in the draft if we somehow pulled off the miracle stunner.

He dodged the question at every opportunity.

Granted, Mangini probably knew what was going on during his time in New England, but I wouldn't say Belichick handled it like a man.
