Well, Big Brown did win, with Eight Bells second, but she broke both of her ankles so they put her down right there.

That has to suck as a horse owner, seriously.

I picked Eight Belles to win the Derby and seeing her go down is so sad. I'm glad they put her down right away because breaking the two front ankles is an awfully painful injury for a horse and there's no way to recover from it so they did the right thing.

It's very unfortunate.

I don't mean to be brash, but I don't get why people make a huge deal out of eight bells dying.

It is perfectly okay Diehard.

I am a huge horse fan, my dad has owned over five horses that have ran at Belmont, his current horse is about to give birth. Horse racing is almost as important as the Mets and Jets for me and my family.

For those who are fans of the sport see the death of a horse as a big deal. These horses are treated like kings and queens, they are in no way mistreated or abuse. When a death of a horse occurs, especially right there on track at the Derby, it is just flat out sad to see. It was a freak accident, Eight Belles never got bumped and hurt herself during the race, the filly hurt herself when the race was over. It just bothers me that so many animal activist groups exploit this freak accident as a cruelty. Some make horse racing as a comparison to dog fighting. Which is completely absurd.

And that's cool. I guess I don't completely understand the sport and the emotional attatchment that goes into it.

Is your family going to have a horse in the Belmont this year?

My dad's horses has never been in the Stakes. But my dad's horse does run at Belmont during the Spring and Summer sessions for daily races. I live about 30 minutes from the track. I will be attending the Belmont Stakes though, I have been there the past two years.
