That was my initial response as well, but Jeter had one of the best years of his career posting near career highs in zone rating and range factor. He posted higer ZR and RF than Omar Vizquel. You could easily argue that Tejada and Crosby have much better range but they also made more errors (of course they also had more chances).

Thanks Jeff. I also am surprised at Jeter's GG. With so many outstanding SS in the AL, and with Jeter's performance in the playoffs (which I guess don't count) you would of thought someone else would have won.

I'll agree that Jeter's had easily his best defensive year in years, I'll still rate him as above average at the best this year... there's no way in my mind that he was the best defensive SS in the AL. I think Tejada (and four other guys after him) got robbed. but who cares anyways? the guys who vote for the GG are the same absent-minded fools who gave Rafael Palmeiro a GG in '99 when he had only played 28 games at 1B. all of these awards have very little credibility in my eyes.

Jeter's ranked eight in RF and sixth in ZR amongst 11 AL SS with a minimum of 108 (2/3 of 162) games . his errors and fpct look better but fpct is a highly flawed stat mainly due to the subjective nature of the term 'error'. an error is a scorekeeper's opinion of what should have happened. It is a subjective opinion, rather than a set standard.

and to get an error, you had to do something right to begin with, even if it was hit right at you then you were standing in the right place to begin with. but there are some balls that get past fielders that are within the average SS's range that don't even touch their gloves, I.e., no error. That's the idea between RF and ZR; to fairly analyze fielding as best as possible which can sometime be very hard.
