Interesting take. I think for the exact reason you listed, I would go the opposite way.
Comparatively, Lebron > Aikman, no argument here. But, that would mean the Pistons never had an opportunity for Lebron. Likewise, the Packers never had a shot at Aikman.
But, whereas I think Lebron is clearly the best player from his draft class, I don't believe Aikman is any better than 3rd out of those top five (and maybe even 4th).
My 89 rankings:
1. B. Sanders
2. D. Sanders
3. D. Thomas
4. T. Aikman
5. T. Mandarich
My 03 rankings:
1. L. James
2. D. Wade
3. C. Anthony
4. C. Bosh
5. D. Milicic
So, I guess while the Packers couldn't get the 4th best player (IMO, of course), they could still get the best.
The Pistons couldn't get the best player... only the 2nd best. |

Yeah, you gotta look at who came after #2 -- who you could have had. I'd be more pissed about missing out on Barry than the other guys. |

Don't look it up but how many times did Aikman throw for over 20 Tds????????
Once. I'm not saying he was a bad QB he was one hell of a leader. And I know E. Smith punched a lot of Td's in but Aikman played on one of the best teams in football with a great offense. It's not like he didn't have weapons to throw to and teams cheating to stop Smith. I think he's a tad overrated. |

That stat means nothing. Comparing Aikman to anyone in this day and age is pointless. Defense no longer exists in the NFL. |

I realize it's a different game now but it's not like QB's back then weren't throwing over 20 td's. Favre, Young, Kelly, Marino, Moon hell even drew bledsoe had multiple 20 td's seasons and some threw over 30tds. (sure there's more) Aikman was just a slightly above avg qb who played on a stacked team and was asked to just not lose the game. He was Trent Dilfer with a longer shelf life.
Per Game avg. 200 yards 1 td almost an int per game. That isn't an all time great qb. Again I'm not saying he was bad I just think people overrate him quite a bit. |

I don't disagree that he's overrated by most ppl, but I think the Dilfer comparison is a bit off. Phil Simms is a little more accurate IMO. |

Well, I hate the Cowboys. I don't know why I am even chiming in.
Yeah he managed games well, they ran the snot out of Smith. The offense worked and they would not have won without each other. Smith doesn't have his numbers without the other two, Irvin doesn't have his without the others as well. Hard to blame him for the stacked team, he was probably the main reason they were considered stacked.
This is why he is "great".

Comparisons can certainly be interesting. While I agree Aikman was not an offensive force and because of game evolution (or trend), he is not comparable to those like Favre, etc., I feel the statement that James > Aikman (stlsportsfan) can have a few views.
Certainly Aikman was not the offensive force James is (this was a more run oriented game). However, Aikman was a leader, a super accurate - mistake-less QB and a leader who won 3 SB.
On the other side we have James, who probably is the best player in the league, or pretends to be the best player and doesn't live to that hype. IMO he is also the best prick in the league, only cares for individual achievements (read stats, All Stars and $) and chokes in the big moments and has yet to reach an NBA final.
Comparisons can be tricky. |

BTW, I don't know who Mandarich is, but surely he couldn't suck and trash talk as much as Darko, who is a top 3 all time nba bust pick. |

That's really my point he was not mistake free. B/c his team won sb's people just overlook it but 165 tds 141 int's. We are not talking about a qb who avg'd 1TD and almost 1 INT per game in the reg season.
Now playoffs he avg'd almost 1.5 td's and 1INT. again not world beater #'s.
He's still a good/great qb bc he had the intangibles but he was a good qb on a great team and wasn't asked to do to much. Had he been expected to throw the ball over 500 times a year maybe he puts up better #'s. Or maybe his team never wins those sb's... |

Hey how dare you badmouth my boy?
As for thrash talking, can you remember that video of Milicic going off at refs? It was either at Olympics or World Championships. |

That video is what I was thinking when I wrote that. I believe he destroyed the "how many times can you say F*** in a speech" world record . Memorable comments linking referees with his weenie. |
