Spring Update 3/13/03
March 14, 2003
Latest Team Info
There are few position battles in the Giants camp at this time: 5th infielder, 5th starter, and one bullpen spot.
Tony Torcato has is the likely candidate for the 5th OF spot, as the Giants are impressed with his sweet swing, and he is out of minor league options.
The 5th starter battle is primarily between Ryan Jensen and Kurt Ainsworth. Felipe Alou recently said he was impressed with Ryan Jensen's ability to get out of major league jams (giving up 8 hits in one outing), yet conveniently ignored that he seems to be in jams all the time- not the best recipe for future success. On the other hand, Kurt Ainsworth is dominating. We'll soon see if Felipe Alou is merely keeping the spirit of competition up between the two, or if he truly prefers Jensen.
Joe Nathan looks to be a lock for the bullpen, as his fastball has returned following recovery from Tommy John Surgery
Local Perspective
This doesn't directly affect anything fantasywise, but Kirk Reuter is unquestionably a TEAM PLAYER. He while signing a 2 year extension through 2005 at below market value, he also agreed to defer 2.5 million of his 2003 salary until the end of the extension.
Why should you care? Aside from the fact that he's a plain good guy, it now means the Giants are only $1.5 million over budget- a very reasonable n umber. This reduces the chance they will deal Felix Rodriguez or Rich Aurilia before seasons start for salary reasons. Livan Hernandez continues to be available, but nobody would want him. Felix Rodriguez, then will likely remain a setup man for the Giants. Watch out during the All-Star break, as the Giants will still deal him if they fall out of the race. Ditto for Aurilia
In 1932, mayor of the Austrian town of Worgl decided to do something about the 35 percent unemployment of his constituency He convinced the town hall to issue
14,000 Austrian shillings' worth of "stamp scrip," which were covered by exactly the same amount of ordinary shillings deposited in a local bank.
After two years, Worgl became the first Austrian city to achieve full employment (Porn Site, Bdsm Art).
Water distribution was generalized throughout, all of the town was repaved, most houses were repaired and repainted,
taxes were being paid early, and forests around the city were replanted.
More than 200 other Austrian communities decided to copy this example, but here again the Central Bank blocked the process.
A legal appeal was made all the way to the Supreme Court, where it was lost.
