Injuries and Callups
April 24, 2003
Thanks to a 98 mph fastball from Billy Wagner, the hot Jeromy Burnitz will be sitting out for the next 4-6 weeks. The Mets called up Raul Gonzalez, who has gone 2-3 the past two games, from AAA Norfolk, to take Burnitz's job in RF.
Roger Cedeno has been indefinitely benched for his poor overall play. He cant play CF, which the Mets probably already knew, and he was hitting .160. Put those two together, and you have a $14 million bencher. DROP HIM NOW
David Cone, who went just two innings in his start Tuesday against the Astros, went on the DL due to a strained hip. It looks like he may be ready to call it a career. Jae Seo takes his spot in the rotation. He pitched 7 strong innings Thursday in Pittsburgh and pitched fair relieving Cone on Wednesday
Pedro Astacio came up from his rehab assignment and pitched well Thursday, going 6 innings and allowing 2 ER.
Armando Benitez, who has had mechanical troubles leading to FOUR blown saves, is still being handed the ball in clutch situations, and has pitched well his last two outings, getting saves in consecutive nights. I would still be wary with him, despite his 6 saves.
Roberto Alomar, since moving to the leadoff spot, has his season average back up to .296. A trip to his native Puerto Rico seems to have done him some good.
Add: Pedro Astacio, Roberto Alomar, Jae Seo
Wait and See: Raul Gonzalez, Armando Benitez
Drop: David Cone, Jeromy Burnitz (or DL him)
