Astacio on the DL
June 01, 2003
The Mets placed Pedro Astacio on the DL today and called up righty Jeremy Griffiths. Griffiths may get a start, although they have not announced it. He has good stuff, and is a former 3rd round pick. Mike Bacsik will get the start. Most likely, he will get bombed and then Pat Strange, a 2nd round pick who has been pitching from the pen, will get the next start. Griffiths moves to the pen.
Jason Phillips has played a nice 1B in place of Mo Vaughn. He has been hitting well and providing bend-over ability in the field. Tony Clark is now again a bench player.
Ty Wigginton is finding his stroke, as is Cliff Floyd. It would be advisable to pick both up.
Robbie Alomar is still hurt with a hip flexor, and Joe McEwing has been starting in his place. No word yet on when Alomar, who had been hitting well, will come back.
Vance Wilson is calling a good game at catcher in place of Mike Piazza, who may be out for the year.
Jae Seo is definitely worthy of a pickup; he stifled the Braves again on Saturday, going over eight innings and allowing only two runs to notch the win.
Al Leiter has had control problems, and walked six in his last start against Philadelphia. This has been raising his pitch counts, and diminishing his innings.
